IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!

After a hot and somewhat rainy summer, we will be heading back into the dry season, which runs from now through May or June.

Remember the brown spots in your lawn last spring and how magically they disappeared when we hit the rainy season?  I know many of you tell me that you do not have problems with sprinkler coverage, but just for fun, check out your system.  Those same brown spots will be back as the rains subside.

 LAWN CARE

AL Hoffer's

When temperatures start to drop below 70 degrees at night, we see three things happen:

1.  The growth rate of St. Augustine grass slows down dramatically.

2.  Weeds continue to grow and are more visible between each mowing.

3.  Fungus can occur without warning and is not preventable.

Lawn, flowers and shrubs should only be watered in the morning hours to allow them to dry out during the day.

As a homeowner, one of the most important things you can do is to keep the height of your lawn above three inches.  Most lawn services want to mow shorter because of the time in between each mowing; however, the best approach is to mow more frequently at maximum height.

As always, whenever a brown area shows up on your lawn in between our regular visits, call our office for a courtesy inspection.

TIPS FROM AL

Is your Christmas tree a carrier of unwanted pests?

Even though there are regulations about fireproofing trees, it is important to remember they were once growing in an open field. They were then loaded into trucks and transported, where they sometimes sat for days or weeks. And even if they make it all the way to where you purchase your tree - think about what lives in those fields - fire ants, ticks, fleas, roaches and mice.

There is a solution and it doesn't cost anything:   Make sure you check all decorations, including the tree, before bringing them into your home. Many people will set the tree in a bucket of water outside on the patio to let it open up. While doing that, take the time to look through to the center of the tree.

And best of all, a little aerosol insecticide (like the kind you buy at the store) lightly sprayed into the tree will tend to flush out or kill any lingering insects. If you follow label directions and apply it correctly, there will be no problem when you bring the tree inside.

          ROACHES...

ROACHES CAN BE A PROBLEM YEAR ROUND, and with holidays and company, it can be a very embarrassing time.

Remember, bringing in boxes from storage, gift purchases or extra grocery sacks can introduce more insects into your home.
