Summer is the time to relax, but it can also be the time to practice without the usual hectic activity for you and your students.
Students who take lessons over the summer can leap ahead at twice the rate during the school year.
And, with fewer commitments, you as the teacher can enjoy learning something new, too.

Can't Find Time to Practice? |
We always tell our students to make practice a priority but it's hard to fit it into our busy lives and, frankly, sometimes the last thing you feel like doing after a busy day of teaching.
Here are some tricks:
- If your student is late or cancels, commit to using the time you already had reserved to practice.
- Keep your instrument in a room you use often during the day and play a few minutes when you pass by. (OK, it's hard to move a piano, I know.)
- Practice your students' music so you can stay one step ahead of them.
- Buy some new music to sight read.
- Create an ensemble and plan a house concert.
- It doesn't have to be practicing, it can just be playing.

Flute Flash
| | Tired of students with bad posture who bend over or slouch? Get a cervical collar from a medical supply store; it cures them immediately and is less dramatic than the spike under the chin cure I always threaten!
Sounding like a broken record asking your students to lower their shoulders? Tie two tennis shoes together and hang them over the student's shoulder.

What Inspires Me | | One of my students just returned from a summer camp and, when I asked him about the level of the other students, he responded, "Almost all of them had fast fingers, but only a few of them had a warm heart."
