Center for History Reaches European Audience
Czech TV Network contacted the Center for History for assistance with three European TV news productions about the Eastland Disaster. The broadcast connected the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic to the capsizing of the S.S. Eastland as Chicago's Titanic. On that fateful day of a company picnic on July 24, 1915, 844 Western Electric employees, family and friends perished when the ship turned on its side in the Chicago River. This catastrophe is Chicago's greatest loss of life tragedy, yet a forgotten story.
Since 25% (213) of the victims were of Czech descent, Czech TV Network wanted to share the story with their audience in Europe. Given that the Center has the largest collection of Eastland memorabilia in the world, the museum was able to provide photos of the Eastland Disaster and victims. The exhibit at the Center was also filmed as well as interviews with Alberta Adamson and Dave Nelson. Additionally the Center has two copies of a 1916 Czech publication listing information about all of the Czech victims. The publication, written in Czech, was a valuable resource to the Network. The publication will be transcribed by the TV Network so the information can be shared and utilized as a reference.
The first two segments were aired the weekend of April 14, 2012. Adamson said it was rewarding to see the credit line with the Center for History on most of the photos and weird to see the Czech subtitles on the screen during her interview. The third segment will be shown closer to July 24th.
