Fortner Awarded Association of Park Districts Legislator of the Year Award

State Representative Mike Fortner (R-West Chicago) was honored January 27, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago by being awarded the Association of Park Districts' 2011 Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award. Fortner was recognized for his commitment to advancing park districts and recreation opportunities for all Illinois citizens.

"This truly is a humbling honor," said Fortner. "Parks and recreation are a vital part of our lives, society and economy. I actively pursue legislation in the Illinois House of Representatives to expand this component of our quality of life."

Representative Fortner was the chief sponsor on five priority bills listed by the Association of Park Districts:

House Bill 3458 - This bill will give park districts the option of using design build, which can result in significant cost savings on some construction projects. The bill was signed into law this General Assembly and is a key reason for Fortner receiving this award.

House Bill 2057 - This bill is meant to address the First District Appellate Court ruling that the Capital Plan passed in the 96th General Assembly is unconstitutional. The bill addresses the issues of the court and finds funding mechanisms to fund the allocated capital projects.

House Bill 3370 - Legislation would require the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund to establish a defined contribution benefit plan that would alleviate some of the pension stress felt by the State.

House Bill 3372 - This legislation seeks to help alleviate municipalities of the high cost of their storm water management plan.

House Bill 3459 - Bill would forbid an employer from forcing an employee to use a vacation day in order to serve as an election judge

College and Career Readiness Day

This is WDSRA's big event for spring.  College and Career Readiness Day is a workshop style event.  Business people will teach our students about resume writing, interview skills and succeeding in a professional setting.  Students will rotate through the speakers. Please see attached.

Sara Williams from Junior Achievement is spearheading the event, which will be held from 8:30 to 2:00 April 19 at DeVry's Addison campus. Students go to school in the morning and schools need to provide transportation to DeVry.   DeVry's campus is empty the day of the event and could accommodate up to 500 students.  Council members are encouraged to serve as a speaker, greet and network with the students or help Matt Johnson at DeVry with logistics.

Action needed:

We need help identifying professionals to run the workshops.  JA will provide a curriculum.  The number of volunteers needed depends on the number of students.  Council members are encouraged to participate. We are looking for people from a broad range of careers - allow students to interact with professionals, who will talk a bit about their background and educational experience.  Contact Sara Williams at JA to get involved: swilliams@jachicago.org
