Greetings!
In my experience the end result of successful team building is synergy and symbiosis, which essentially means that the sum of the teamwork is greater than the parts of the team. Having recruited, built and developed many teams across three continents where some challenges included converting Asian corporate cultures after hostile takeovers, to multimillion pound start-up's with tight deadlines where I did not speak the language, to inheriting 500 strong 5 year old work forces where complacency, blame and denial had become the cultural norm, to closing divisions down and redistributing retained expertise and resources, these six keys to a winning team remain resolute...

In Part 1 we investigated the elements of...

1. Strong Leadership.
A team is nothing more than a reflection of its Leader. Stop asking yourself how I can get my team to perform better and start asking yourself how can I become a better leader?

 2. Common Goal.
If a team do not know what the business is trying to achieve over a certain time period (at least 12 months) how can they truly contribute?

In Part 2 we investigated the elements:

3. Rules of the Game.
Do team members take ownership of the responsibilities that 'you' have defined for them through contacts, hand books, job descriptions, procedures, core values, and how do you hold them accountable to these?

4. Action Plan.
Every business needs an action plan that breaks down how results are to be achieved into manageable strategies in pursuit of the common goal(s), core purpose and business vision. How have you integrated your action plan into your business culture and systems?

Now let's investigate elements 5 and 6 of:

5. Support Risk Taking
.
Business teams are like trees - they are either growing or dying. Without being open to some degree of healthy risk, it is impossible for a team to flourish and push the limits of creativity and performance. To experience a breakthrough it is sometimes important to break from convention and habit and get out of the comfort zone and into the risk and reward zone.

6. 100% Team member inclusion and involvement
The art of inclusion is very powerful and driven by 2 way communications empowering team members to contribute (give suggestions for improvement). By providing 100 percent inclusion you will inspire 100 percent involvement as an expectation of the organization's culture, which will lead to trust and a comfort level for you to effectively 'delegate' responsibilities.

Action Tip:
Ask each team member to list 3 suggestions for improvement, review and publish an action plan of them, and where possible empower team members to implement the changes.
