I'm With the DJ
By Jodi Petrich
You likely support Rock the Cause because you have an
appreciation for music and its ability to bring people together for a great
cause and a good time. While RTC is known for showcasing great bands, there is
an entire segment of the Cities that dances to a different drummer. Minneapolis has a thriving electronic music scene - you name
the genre, we've got it. International superstars constantly swing through
thanks to promoters such as Sound in Motion and V2 Nightlife. Hometown heroes
such as Chuck Love (aka the "Prince" of house music) travel the globe sharing
the essence of Minneapolis with packed dance floors. First Avenue is busy again
thanks to Soviet Panda (Too Much Love) and VIP Room residents Hot Dish, who host
local and national talent on their monthly night, "Black", to name a few. Sometimes it's a dive bar, other times it's a packed club,
but whatever your musical fancy, you can find it any night of the week. There's
even a new radio station, Energy 89.7, that's striving to shakeup the airwaves
with an electronic tip. Still prefer a band? Consider checking out Tambuca - deep
house music with a Latin vibe and 100% improvised - or The New Congress, whose
blend of R&B and rock pleases fans of all musical preferences. The DJ's
create the foundation from which the bands can jam, and jam they do. Most importantly, they give back. For example, after the
tsunami hit in 2004, 36 DJ's donated their time and together raised $10,000 for
the World Health Organization. DJ's, like bands, want to rock and use their
talents to support the community. We're excited to bring a new element to the RTC mix and to
further our mission through the power of music. Watch this space for future
events, emerging artist info and more free downloads. |
Artist Profile: Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps By Ali Goldberg
Everything about this band is just charming: from the lead singer to the folksy, stripped-down beats that this trio pumps out. Their new album Backyard Tent Set is full of songs that are witty and sweet, without giving you a sugar-induced headache. The band is composed of quirky vocals by front woman Caroline Smith, whose strawberry blonde hair and freckles only add to the sunny disposition of her music. Arlen Peiffer on drums and Jesse Schuster on bass provide a simple yet perfect blend of acoustics to Smith's fantastically unique voice. Her songs hint at the simplicity of young love and childhood things, while proving their strength as well-written ballads from an intricate and creative mind. |
