Fall 2010

Dear Eckerd Parent,

It's hard to believe finals are around the corner and the Fall Semester will soon come to a close. We're sure that, like us, you are looking forward to spending time with your Triton son or daughter during the break.

On October 15, the Parent Council began its third year with a meeting at which members received exciting updates on the College's Many Experiences, One Spirit Campaign and committees planned their activities for the year. Two of the Council's top initiatives for 2010-2011 are to continue to increase internship and externship opportunities for Eckerd students and to meet the Parent Fund goal of $275,000. The Council has also updated the look of Parent ConnECtions to reflect Eckerd's new Web site design. We hope you enjoy it!

You can learn more about how to help the Council and the College expand internship opportunities for students in the article below. Also, we encourage you to drop by the Parent Council Reception during Family Weekend to talk with Council members who have hosted Eckerd interns and hear about their unique experiences.

Parent Council members enjoy connecting with fellow Eckerd parents, and we encourage you to contact the Parent Council at any time by sending an email to parentcouncil@eckerd.edu.

MANY EXPERIENCES, ONE SPIRIT CAMPAIGN UPDATE

The Campaign is

invigorating and upgrading programs, departments, grounds and buildings all over campus. To date, five professorships--in Film Studies, Finance, Creative Writing, Humane Letters and Natural Sciences-- have been endowed; the GO Pavilion is nearing completion for a grand opening during Family Weekend; and, coming next fall, the groundbreaking for the long-awaited Center for Molecular and Life Sciences will take place. These exciting enhancements are all thanks to the generosity of Eckerd supporters. Many Eckerd families are participating in this historic College Campaign, and so far Eckerd parents have given nearly $900,000 in support of the new Science facility.
Offer an Internship to an Eckerd Student
The Parent Council's Internship Committee, in partnership with the Office of Career Resources, has dedicated itself to increasing internship opportunities for Eckerd students. Some Council members were able to provide students with an internship at their companies last year. As a result of these very positive experiences, the Parent Council recognized that parents can make a real difference in students' career opportunities by expanding internships and externships at Eckerd.

Sources for internships include businesses in your area, your clients, your friends and organizations where you volunteer. Internships are great opportunities that open doors for college students and recent graduates, and your assistance with expanding Eckerd's programs will help our children succeed.

If your organization is interested in learning more about hosting an Eckerd intern, or if you know of an internship at a company in your area, please contact Caroline Murphy, Director of Career Resources, at 727.864.8258.

The Eckerd College Men's and Women's Basketball teams anticipate great seasons this year. The Men's team, led by Head Coach Tom Ryan '87, has been picked to finish fourth in the Sunshine State Conference, according to the league's pre-season poll. The Tritons have 3 starters and 11 letter-winners returning from a squad that went 19-9 and narrowly missed out on an NCAA Tournament invitation last year.

The Tritons will host a tailgate party prior to games on January 29, February 5 and February 16. Free food and soft drinks will be available, so if you are visiting your student during one of these times, please come out and support the team!

The Women's Basketball team, led by Head Coach Paul Honsinger, also returns 3 starters. Included is standout senior guard Ashley Lutz, who led Eckerd in scoring last year with 14.3 points per game.

To follow the Tritons, please visit the Eckerd Athletics Web site. Remind your student to support the Tritons, attend home games and check out the dates for the tailgate parties!

In addition to these popular Winter Term trips, Eckerd also offers opportunities to study abroad during its spring-into-summer program.
