Dear Parent,
The Parent Council held its first meeting of the 2009-2010 academic year in October, and one of the hot topics was how the Council can help find internships and jobs for Eckerd students and graduates. The College already offers help to students and alumni through the Office of Career Resources and the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA). The Council is working with these departments to help build a network of parents who are willing to help students make career decisions, secure internships, and find employment. You can read more, in this newsletter, about how you can help.
Are you interested in helping Eckerd in other ways? Email us and let us know! We are always looking for volunteers to help with college fairs and regional events, to name a few.
In addition to assisting the College with its mission, the Parent Council is a voice for the Eckerd parent community. If you have a question or a suggestion, please share it with the Council, and we will make sure that your voice is heard. You can contact the Council at parentcouncil@eckerd.edu.
We hope your student is enjoying the autumn months in St. Petersburg, and we look forward to meeting some of you during Family Weekend in February!
Best regards, Ed and E.J. Mahoney (P '10) Eckerd College Parent Council Co-Chairs

FACULTY PROFILE: Professor Peter Hammerschmidt
What is your educational background? I attended Colorado State University (CSU) to major in Wood Chemistry in the College of Forestry. However, once there, I discovered my excitement about Economics and changed my major to Economics, specializing in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics. While at CSU, I earned by B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Economics.
What is your current position at Eckerd College? My primary role at Eckerd is as Professor of Economics. I am one member of a very talented four-person Economics department. I also serve on a part-time basis as Research Associate and Senior Instructor at Eckerd's Leadership Development Institute (LDI).
Prof. Hammerschmidt with Parent Council members Arleen and Gary Pedone (P '09, '12), and their son, Devin '09
What is your teaching philosophy? My basic philosophy is to add value and to have fun. In teaching I seek to do this by assisting students to discover their passion and to become lifelong learners. I enjoy helping students discover their strengths and weaknesses, and to enable them to use their strengths to good advantage. I like to challenge students to achieve at higher levels than they thought possible and to enjoy their growth and share in their excitement when they excel.
How has Eckerd changed over the years? Eckerd has changed much in the 30-plus years I have been here in terms of new majors, new programs, new buildings, etc. However, the real strength of Eckerd College, from my perspective, is what we have not changed. Eckerd is still a National Liberal Arts College committed to excellence in all its forms. We attract a committed and caring faculty of exceptional teachers of the highest integrity: a faculty willing to innovate to become even better teachers. We also continue to attract good people as students who seek to make a difference in the world. It is most rewarding to partner with them in their education.
What has been your greatest professional achievement during your time at Eckerd? I have a real source of pleasure in working with all student groups at one time or another: residential students, adult students in the Program for Experienced Learners and the Academy of Senior Professionals, and corporate leaders in the Leadership Development Institute.
The most memorable times have come in our off-campus Winter Term programs through International Education. I have had the extreme privilege of leading student and business groups in high performance teaming courses on Bareboat sail adventures, mountain climbs of Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua, treks through New Zealand, safaris on the Serengeti, leadership studies in Anarctica, as well as America's Cup Sailing. In addition to these exciting off-campus experiences, I fondly recall the opportunity my wife, Jodie, and I had to live with and teach our Eckerd students in London for the semester (as well as several summer programs there). Teaching at the London Study Centre was one of the best times and most educational experiences I have ever had and epitomizes the best of Eckerd College.

Internships and Job Opportunities
The Parent Council and Career Resources are working together to help find internship and job opportunities for students and alumni. As an Eckerd parent, you can help by:
1. Letting us know of available internships and jobs at your organization. Email the Parent Council with listings, or you can directly post your listing on the Career Resources Web site. 2. Serving as a career mentor. Students benefit from speaking with someone who currently works in the field they wish to join. If you would like to make yourself available to students with career questions, please email the Parent Council or Career Resources. 3. Encouraging your student to visit Career Resources. The Office of Career Resources hosts career fairs, on-campus interviews, a spring Etiquette Dinner and campus speakers. Students also can schedule appointments to receive help with resumes, cover letters, and finding internships and jobs. Please encourage your student to utilize this campus resource!

Leadership Development Institute In October, Eckerd College's Leadership Development Institute (LDI) partnered with Discovery Learning, Inc. to deliver the Effective Leadership Workshop: Addressing the Challenges of Change and Conflict. The workshop was conducted at SunTrust in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop was hosted by Parent Council member, Jim Beaty, and SunTrust. Thirty-one executives representing 17 different organizations, including some Fortune 500 companies, attended the workshop. If you would like more information about partnering with Eckerd to host a Leadership Workshop at your organization, please contact Megan Watson Kramer '98, LDI's Director of Client Relations, at 1-800-753-0444 or watsonma@eckerd.edu.
