Today's Teens are Tomorrow's Trendsetters
Teens are always searching for ways to look older than what they are and selecting the right eyewear can play a big part in achieving that goal. Just when you thought that your teen was completely ignoring you, guess again. They are actually taking notice, at least when it comes to your eyewear selection!
 | | 10x220 (Fashiontabulous) |
Eyewear for teen and tween girls can be a bit flirtatious and fun while exuding a subtle air of sophistication. Feminine design details may include colorful multi-faceted gemstones (10x220), laser-engraved temples (10x222) or a fun accent in the temples (10x223).
 | | 10x219 (Fashiontabulous) |
These young ladies are ready to trade in their girly pastels for deeper, richer colors that fade and layer (10x219) to give a coming of age feel.
 | | Baja (Modz) |
The look for teen and tween boys ranges from preppy and geeky (Baja) to sleek and sporty (Roanoke). These young men emulate their fathers with retro-shaped eyewear, but may also be drawn toward masculine geometric details that offer a pop of color (Roxbury).
 | | Roanoke (Modz) |
Their very active lifestyles require their eyewear to be highly durability so features such as spring hinges and quality frame materials are a must.

Regional Frame Trends
Each year Eyecare Business publishes a very informative report about the regional and national trends in the optical industry and general economy. Below is a summary of that report, with particular emphasis on the optical industry.
Generally speaking, plastic frames are in fashion! The universal frame is "geek chic", with the cats-eye retro fascination also doing exceptionally well. Plastic has surpassed the 50% mark in three out of four regions in the USA and 53% nationally for the first time since the Eyecare Business Regional Trends study began.
Consumers' appetite to spend remains fairly broad-based, with undertones of cautiousness and price sensitivity. As a result, value eyewear continues to find strength as a reliable market niche. As we view the country on a regional basis, distinct patterns emerge in terms of consumer purchasing patterns, price changes, and second pair sales. To view important frame trends in your geographic area, click on the appropriate region below.

Yelp Your Way to More Customers
What is Yelp? It is an online rating/review service that helps consumers find local quality businesses from optometrists and dentists to restaurants and mechanics. (learn more at www.yelp.com). With 71 million monthly visitors, Yelp has become a powerful force in driving consumers to or from local businesses... especially in urban areas.
Judging by these statistics from a recent study by Search Engine Land, Yelp really matters:
* 85% of respondents use the internet to find a local business
* 27% regularly read online reviews when choosing local businesses
* 65% read between 2 and 10 reviews
* 52% are more likely to use a local business if they have positive reviews.
Unfortunately, you cannot expect to receive a glowing commentary by every patient who chooses to post a review. EyeCare Business provides good advice on how to handle negative comments in their recent article, "When Bad Reviews Happen to Good Businesses" (July, 2012). Instead of being reactive, however, you might consider a more proactive approach to stay ahead of the inevitable bad review. If you have a patient who you are confident was satisfied with their service, ask them to consider posting a review on a business review website such as Yelp. The request can be verbally at the end of their visit, or it can be in the form of a follow up postcard. The card would not only thank them for using your practice to service their eye care needs, but it would also ask them to help spread the word through an online post to Yelp. Have a sign at the check out area with the Yelp icon stating your appreciation for receiving a positive online review. Embracing the power of online reviews is a smart way to create an ongoing source of referrals. Taking a proactive stance and let social media play in your favor!
