President's Message
from
Kelly Langston
|
Happy Fall to All,
Many thanks to everyone for participating in our Parent Engagement Conference and Full Council meeting. What a fabulous day! I would like to thank Guilford County Schools for their generous support and NCA&T State University for hosting us and making us feel so at home. I would also like to thank the GCC of PTAs Board of Directors for their very hard work.
Please remember to submit your council dues, if you have not already done so. Working together we can accomplish great things. Thanks to all our local units that have already joined. We appreciate you!
I truly hope that everyone is getting settled into the school year and things are going smoothly. Please know that we at GCC of PTAs are here to help support you in all your efforts. We know that parental involvement improves outcomes for all children. And, PTA is here to promote positive and productive parental involvement!
PTA is an amazing organization advocating for all children. There are nearly 5 million members speaking together on behalf of our precious kids. No other organization supports families and children at the local, county, state and federal levels. PTA does it and PTA does it well!
Thanks for making a difference,
Kelly Langston

Men Organized To Raise Engagement
|
GCC of PTAs' Men Organized To Raise Engagement Committee would like to thank everyone who attended the Parent Engagement Conference. It was great to learn of all of the volunteer opportunities men are taking advantage of throughout GCS. Research shows that fathers/men being involved in a child's education benefits them greatly.
When we support our children, they: - Learn more
- Perform better in school
- Exhibit healthier behavior
- Have fewer discipline problems
- Are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities
- Enjoy school more
- See a positive male role model
If anyone would like an FBI T-shirt, information on the All-Pro Dads Breakfast Program or assistance with ideas on how to get more men involved please contact us. Also, if your male volunteers are doing great things with your PTA we would like to recognize them in future newsletters. If you have any questions or would like assistance in forming a Men's Group please feel free to contact Chris Herndon or Darren Cason at gccmore12@gmail.com Don't forget about these excellent resources to also assist you in getting more men involved at your schools www.pta.org www.fathers.com www.allprodad.com

Guilford Parent Academy Announces 24/7 Dad Series
Free Workshops Focus On Helping Fathers Become Positive Role Models
|
History and research tell us that when fathers or father-like figures are involved in a child's life, kids learn more, perform better in school and exhibit healthier behavior. Even when fathers do not share a home with their children, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.
To that end, Guilford Parent Academy, in conjunction with Hayes Taylor Memorial YMCA and the Family Life Council, will hold its "24/7 Dad Series" on Oct. 4, 11, and 18 at the Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA (Teen Center), located at 1101 East Market St., Greensboro from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
"The 24/7 Dad series is the most comprehensive parent education program available to fathers, father-figures, parental guardians or mentors," says Walter Johnson, Jr., Fatherhood Educator for Children's Home Society of North Carolina. "It places specific interest on building strong, healthy father-child relationships. With innovative tools, strategies and exercises for fathers of all races, religions, cultures and backgrounds, these classes are specially developed by fathering and parenting experts to focus on the characteristics men need to be good fathers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
Topics to be discussed throughout the three-session workshop include: family origin, masculinity, understanding yourself, handling and expressing emotions, spirituality, physical and mental health, fathering and family roles, culture, discipline, rewards and punishment, expectations and children's development, balancing work and family, and getting involved with your children. Attendance at all workshops is not mandatory; however, it is strongly recommended that participants attend the entire series of workshops.
To learn more about "The 24/7 Dad" series please contact the Guilford Parent Academy at (336) 279-4924.

Kid's Voting
Educating and Engaging Our Young Citizens
__________________________________________
The goal of Kids Voting is to empower young people to participate in our democracy and let their voices be heard. By participating in Kids Voting students learn about government, democracy, voting, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The program creates an expectation that they will become lifelong, informed voters at age 18.
We provide classroom activities that encourage family dialogue and community involvement, an authentic voting experience for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade, and related service-learning opportunities.
Our program is made possible through longstanding partnerships with public, private, home, and charter schools; teachers; community and civic organizations; local businesses; and dedicated volunteers of all ages.
Each school has a Kids Voting Coordinator (most often a social studies teacher) who is responsible for overseeing the use of Kids Voting classroom activities and resources, planning school-wide Kids Voting activities, and executing Kids Voting's mock election.
___________________________________________
To emphasize the importance of Kids Voting, the Guilford County Council Of PTAs has passed a resolution stating our support of this educational program.
