Rev. Carol Uzzle Retires

Sunday, September 30

Join us in expressing appreciation to Rev. Carol Tignor Uzzle, Minister for Teaching and Learning, at a reception in her honor on Sunday, September 30, in the welcome center immediately following the 11:00 am worship service. As previously announced, Carol is retiring September 30 after almost 14 years of service at Reveille. Her well-earned retirement comes after a 43-year career in ministry with United Methodist churches in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Carol will be presenting Bibles to third graders September 30 as Reveille celebrates Christian Education Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. worship service.

We plan to present Carol with a gift at the reception. If you would like to contribute, please provide a check by Sunday, September 23 payable to Reveille UMC, and note "Uzzle gift." In addition, there will is a memory box in the welcome center where you can place a card or personal note. Thank you for your support.

Reveille is the community of faith that nurtured Carol as a child and youth and where as a third grader she was confirmed. Focusing on discipleship ministries, Carol has shared her faith with Reveille's youngest children and the oldest members, calling them each by name. As a deacon, she has connected our congregation with the world and provided opportunities for children and adults to reach out to others in acts of compassion and caring. She has worked with leaders, recruited participants, ministered to those in need, and communicated the Church's hope. Carol has been a blessing to Reveille, serving with love and devotion. We have grown spiritually through her service, and we are thankful for what she has given us, our families, our church, and our community. We wish her well in retirement and pray God's blessings upon her and her family as she continues to answer God's call to serve Him and His purpose.

A Special Safety Request to Parents

In an article about Promotion Sunday in last week's newsletter (The Reveille Window) parents were asked to do some specific things that would benefit their children in Sunday school, from being on time each week to praying for the teachers and children.

I want to share with you an ongoing concern I have had and ask your help: Please do not leave your children unattended while in the building. You know me well enough to know that I love your children and that I would never want anything harmful to happen to them, so this request grows out of that love.

According to our Child Protection Policy, we have put many measures in place to assure the safety of our children and youth once they are in our care. Please go with your children to their classrooms and pick them up afterwards. If discussion is lively in your adult class designate one parent to gather up the children and bring them back to your location.

With the new addition we have added six outside doors to the existing 27 doors. That adds up to 33 doors through which persons can exit with at least 7-8 ways off the property once outside. Let me stress that we have not had harm done to a child on Sundays, but that does not mean that could never happen.

You know, I know your children and keep an eye out for them, but inside I shudder when I see children leaving worship without an adult to go to the restroom or leave the fellowship hall to go alone to the main level. There is not much I can do during worship, but more than once I have left a meeting to be sure your children are safe.

Come October you won't have this set of eyes watching out for your children, and it takes new staff a while to know you and your family. Please think safety first here at Reveille just as you do in other places where you take your sons and daughters.

Friendship Pads
Your help is requested

Each Sunday, all who attend worship at any of our three services are askFriendship pad printed to fill out a page in the friendship pad. Attendance is entered into our database, and changes and notes recorded on your sheet are forwarded to the appropriate staff person. It would be very helpful if you could do a few things to help us expedite the processing and use of this information:

  • Please print.
  • If you have children and you let one of them fill out the sheet for you, please check behind him/her to make sure that the writing is legible.
  • Whether an adult or child fills out the form, please be sure that your last name is on the sheet. While most staff members know your last name just by seeing the first names of your family members, the volunteers who input attendance into the database may not.
  • If you put your last name first, please insert a comma before you include the first name or names.
  • Please list the first name of all persons attending and not just your last name.
Your help with this will be much appreciated.

Moving In, Moving On

As our college and university students begin their fall semester, please remember to update Reveille with their school mailing address (regular mail and email, please). Our church tries to stay in touch with students with notes and care packages. Please send freshmen addresses to Dwayne Stinson and college or graduate school addresses to Carol Uzzle.

Are You A Good Golfer?

Let your golfing do some good. The Jeremiah Project LINK: (www.jeremiahproject.org) is a middle school mission organization. Since 2008 Reveille has had a tradition of sending teams. This summer alone 47 Reveille youth and adults built wheelchair ramps, repaired porches and steps, and painted for the needy and elderly in Winchester, Virginia and Romney, West Virginia.

Golf

On September 18, Jeremiah Project is sponsoring a fundraising golf tournament at Colonial Heritage Golf Club in Williamsburg. It begins at 12 noon with a shotgun start. This is a great way to spend an afternoon golfing and supporting a great cause. Individuals play for $125; a foursome costs $450. For more information or to register, click here. Information about corporate sponsorship is available on the same web page. Net proceeds will support the work Jeremiah Project does around Virginia and West Virginia.
