Labor Day Reflections
Labor Day brings to mind picnics, cookouts and family gatherings. Falling on the first Monday in September, it marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. But the holiday was created in 1882 to honor the social and economic contributions of American workers. In a strong economy, it's easy to take for granted the ability to work and be paid well. But times have changed during the past few years, with many people still struggling with unemployment and underemployment. During our holiday celebrations this year, let's give thanks for the jobs we have, pray for those who aren't as fortunate and offer words of encouragement or help to someone who needs it.

Children's Sunday School Promotion Sunday
is September 9
Fall Sunday school for children kicks off on September 9 at 9:30 am. Children will go directly to their new classrooms. Signs will be posted and families will receive information about their child's new class and teachers. We ask the following of parents:
- Be on time
- Be regular in your attendance
- Go with your child to their class and pick them up from their class
- Wait until the teacher dismisses the class before picking up your child
- Take time each week to read the scriptures and talk about what your child is learning in Sunday school
- Pray for your child, their class and their teachers
On September 2 children's Sunday school classes will still be combined. Children who will be in the three-year-old and prekindergarten classes will meet in room 07. Those who are entering kindergarten and first grade will meet in room 06. Both of these classes are located under the fellowship hall. Children entering second through sixth grade will gather on the second floor of the education building in room 200.

Alpha Offered This Fall
Alpha is an important part of life at Reveille. Since January 2011 more than 100 of our members and friends have taken the Alpha course, and many have reported that it has re-energized their faith and devotional life. One of our former Reveille Alpha participants stated after the course: I feel a closer connection with God, Jesus Christ and members of Reveille.
Alpha is an international ministry now being used in every major denomination in more than 150 countries around the world. It is a place for anyone to investigate questions about God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more. Through Alpha, many have discovered a life changing relationship with God. It has become an important place for Reveille members and friends to meet and make lasting friendships that are built during the Alpha course. Some guests have never been to church while others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.
The Alpha course meets once a week for 10 weeks. There is also a day-away retreat, which is held midway through the course. Sessions begin with a meal (our Alpha meals at Reveille are a highlight!), followed by a short talk and time to discuss what's been taught in a small-group setting. Serving as a springboard for the small group discussions, these weekly talks cover various topics including the following: "Who is Jesus?" "How do I pray?" "What about the church?" "Who is the Holy Spirit?" and others.
The fall Alpha course will be held on Tuesday nights from 6:00-8:15 pm starting September 11. We will conclude on November 13. The day-away retreat will be on Saturday, October 20.
If you are unable to come to the dinner but would still like to participate, you may register here http://www.reveilleumc.org/adult_reg. If you have further questions, please contact Burdette Robinson or Rev. Carol Uzzle, Minister for Teaching and Learning. For answers by phone, call Carol at 359-6041 ext. 117. Child care will be provided for all alpha sessions.

What Do Christians Believe?
GET ANSWERS IN CHRISTIAN BELIEVER
Christian Believer is a study of the classic doctrines of the Christian faith. This 30-week study presents, explains, and interprets Christian doctrine as the basic teaching of the church. The doctrines and the traditions of the Christian faith are rooted in Scripture. Daily scripture readings are part of the preparation for the weekly class. A sampling of the topics covered include God: Creator, Grace, Jesus Christ: Lord, The Trinity and Sacraments.
Our senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jim Noland, along with Jake Noland, will lead this class that will meet on Sunday evenings, 5:00-7:00 pm beginning September 16. The resources for the class include a study manual and a book of readings. Child care will be provided.

Disciple 1: Making Disciples through Bible Study
Disciple 1: Making Disciples through Bible Study is a 34-week course that covers over 70% of the Bible. A typical Disciple class will be a mixture of those who know very little about the Bible sitting beside those who have read and studied the Bible for a number of years. The common factor is that we ask everyone to read the Scriptures as if for the first time. Each time we read a passage God speaks to us in fresh ways when we are seeking to grow as disciples. This in-depth study of the Bible is not a lecture or fact-gathering class but seeks to transform the participants by strengthening their faith and understanding of what it means to be a disciple. Disciple 1 will begin on September 16, meeting from 5:00-7:00 pm. Steve Holdych will lead the class with another facilitator. There is a cost for the student study book and child care will be provided. Register online here.

Immersion Bible Study
Short-term Study on Book of Romans
Do you sometimes think that the Bible is overwhelming and intimidating? The Immersion Bible Study was created to provide an avenue for participants to explore intellectual, emotional and spiritual insights into themselves, their needs and their relationship with God. Adam Hamilton, pastor of Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, writes of this series, Immersion Bible Studies is a powerful tool in helping readers to hear God speak through Scripture and experience a deeper faith as a result. On September 16 a 5-week study of Romans from this series will begin at 5:00 pm led by Andy Weaver. Child care will be provided. As with all other studies, register online here.

Women of Spirit Study Group Invites Women to Join
The Women of Spirit Bible study group will continue their study of Philip Yancey's book, Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference. This intergenerational group of women meets on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 during the school year, providing spiritual and social nourishment to one another as they strive to understand God's will. The group will spend the first few weeks finishing Philip Yancey's book on prayer. This is not a study that requires that you have read the first part of the book to participate.
In this book, Yancey explores questions such as "Why do answers to prayers seem so inconsistent?" and "Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seems far away?" All women who yearn to deepen their faith are welcome to participate. The first meeting will be on September 12. Child care will be provided. Register online here.

Special Fall Classes for First and Third Graders
THE CHILDREN AND WORSHIP CLASS
The Children and Worship class is a long-standing part of our ministry with children. Offered each fall during the Sunday school and worship hours, first graders become familiar with all aspects of our worship services. Some first graders will attend an entire worship service for the first time, and like with any new experience, when you are prepared and understand what and why things are happening you can participate with confidence. Knowing when to stand or sit and knowing how to read a hymn or the words to the doxology are just a small part of what the children will learn. At the end of November there will be a family night for parents and first graders. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving the children will be recognized during the 11:00 worship service and each will receive a United Methodist Hymnal.
Bible 1-2-3
During the Sunday school hour this fall, our third graders will put aside their regular curriculum so that they may become familiar with the Bible. Sunday mornings will be a time to learn how to find chapter and verse, know the difference between the Old and New Testaments and gain skills in locating Bible stories and scriptures that will enrich their lives. Ellie and Jay Speer, the third grade teachers, are planning learning activities that are fun and will help the children read and use the Bible. On September 30, when we celebrate Christian Education Sunday, the children will each receive a Bible with their name imprinted on the cover. The new Common English Bible, which is used in the Sunday school curriculum, will be the version the children will be given.

New Sunday School Curriculum for Children
Grow, Proclaim, Serve! Grow Your Faith by Leaps and Bounds is the new United Methodist curriculum resource we will be using with our children's Sunday school classes this school year. Using this exciting new literature, our teachers will seek to help children, from birth through fifth grade, grow in their faith. Each lesson helps children develop the skills to unlock the message of the Bible and grow by leaps and bounds as they share the good news of God's love and serve others in His name. Reveille's Milestones for a Growing Faith for children are in line with the scope and sequence of the new curriculum.
The fall units of study are based on the Old Testament stories of Moses. The September unit, We Remember Moses, covers the story of the baby Moses in the basket through the celebration led by his sister Miriam when the Hebrew people were safely away from Pharaoh and his armies.
We Remember, God's People is the October focus, which covers the stories of the time in the Wilderness through the time when Joshua was chosen by God to lead the people into the land of Caanan.
The quarter ends in November with We Remember, God's Promised Land, the story of sending Hebrew spies into Caanan to becoming God's people in the midst of those who did not believe in God.
These are some of the many Old Testament stories we love sharing with children. Our hope is that throughout the week at home parents will tell the stories over and over again, just as you do family stories, for these are our faith stories. Children in Nursery 2 and the two-year old classes will receive a picture card related to the lesson for the day. Older children will continue to bring home story papers or faith guides that parents can use to reinforce the previous Sunday's lesson.
