This is a combined issue of The Reveille Window; there will be no August 5 issue. We'll see you again in two weeks with the August 12 issue.

Vacation Bible School and Day Camp

We anticipate over 120 children to participate in Vacation Bible School (VBS) and a record 45 children in the Day Camp during VBS 2012 logo the week July 30 - August 3. VBS directors Corbin Neuner, Jennifer Rosen and Sandy Myers began planning and recruiting for VBS back in January, while Ellie Speer planned for the Day Camp experience.

This week will be fun filled for the younger children at VBS as they explore God's love. The older children in Day Camp will have an opportunity to let God's light and love shine through them as they serve in outreach ministries each day.

We give thanks for the many adults and youth who will provide leadership with our children in this very busy week. Be sure to read highlights of the week in the next issue of The Window.

Drivers Needed for Sunday Worship

Congregational Care is looking for drivers to help pick up some of our older adults at The Drivers needed Hermitage on Sunday mornings. Drivers leave the church at around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning for The Hermitage, pick up three to five people and drop them off in the circle in front of the sanctuary for the 11:00 service. After worship, drivers pick up the same passengers in the circle and return them to The Hermitage.

We are looking for drivers between ages 25 and 72 who enjoy working with older adults. No special driver's license is required, although Reveille will need to do a background check with the DMV. If you can help with this ministry, please contact Stephen Coleman here or call 359-6041, ext. 115.

ReStoring the Eastern Shore, One Home at a Time

Picture a single mother juggling her job as a physician's nursing assistant and her role as parent for three children - daughters ages 10 and 12, and a son, 7. Every day on her  Mission trip - bag tag way from work, she drops by to check on the progress of her home, the new home Habitat for Humanity is building for her. For the third time since 2008, Reveille's high school youth will travel to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to build with Habitat for Humanity, where they will continue work on this home so this mother and her children can move in by the holidays.

In addition to their work on the home, our youth will help stock and set up the Eastern Shore's first Habitat ReStore, a retail outlet for donated building supplies and housewares that Habitat receives. The ReStore provides additional income to the affiliate, selling items that cannot be used in new home construction. It provides lower-priced fixtures and supplies for the area - a win-win for Habitat and residents!

This youth mission team departs on August 5. Please keep these 23 youth and adults in your prayers as they serve: Trey Berry, Emily Calder, Byron Clark, Brian Craven, Katherine Cumpton, Sarah Denny, Laura Follansbee, Lizzie Graumlich, Will Greer, Sharon Humphreys, Bentley Logue, Erin Maloney, Ellie Manspile, Daniel Pinson, Clay Rogers, Anna Salmon, John Salmon, Richard Schweiker, Marlee Shepherd, Dwayne Stinson, Hannah Thompson, and Olivia Vivadelli.

Will You Help Brighten Someone's Day?

Perhaps you are looking for a way to serve your church family but are not yet ready to make a big commitment. Please consider being a day brightener to a member who is hospitalized or who lives in a retirement facility. This does not involve visita Altar flowers tion, unless you so choose. You are asked only to transport the altar flowers from a worship service to a hospital or facility such as The Hermitage or Westminster-Canterbury. Our Flower  Delivery Volunteers are a team of people who are scheduled to serve once every 5 to 8 weeks, depending on how many volunteers we have. Currently we can use at least two more individuals or families to help with this. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Cheryl Arrington in the church office here  or 359-6041, ext. 114.

Testimonial from a Flower Delivery Volunteer

I began as a flower delivery volunteer many years ago when my children were toddlers. It was a way in which I could serve others alongside my young children and an opportunity to model kindness and empathy to them. Together we visited members of the congregation in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and in their homes.* Sometimes we spent a few minutes visiting, sometimes we just left the flowers in a hospital room, but in every instance, my children and I experienced the pleasure of a small but meaningful gesture.

A small card which accompanies the flowers reads as follows:

These flowers have heard the hymns that were sung,

The prayers offered, and the sermon preached.

Now, with their silent message, they come to you

with our love and good wishes.

REVEILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Richmond, Virginia

Indeed, the flowers do seem to bring the fellowship, prayers, and beautiful hymns to each person who receives them.

The flowers can be delivered at the volunteer's convenience on Sundays following the 11:00 service or anytime on the following day. I hope you will consider offering your time for this ministry a few times a year.

- Susan Creasey

*Editor's note: We are blessed that this volunteer and her family choose to go to facilities beyond what is asked of them and also to make visits, but this is done at the volunteer's discretion and is not required of flower delivery volunteers.

Big Weekend at Reveille - September 22-23, 2012

We are looking forward to two huge events coming to Reveille in September. At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, Reveille will be the site of a service of celebration for the assignment of the Rev. Dr. Young Jin Cho as bishop of the Virginia Annual Conference. We are honored that clergy and guests from throughout the Conference will be in our sanctuary on this date to welcome Bishop Cho, who most recently served as Arlington District Superintendent.

On Sunday, September 23, we will celebrate Reveille Day with one combined worship service at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary and a catered lunch afterward. Be sure to mark your calendar for this annual day of worship and fellowship.

August Book Review will Feature New Author

Your last chance to attend a Reveille summer book review is Wednesday, August 29 (please note date change). This month Lydia Netzer will be here to talk about her debuAugust 2012 book review authort novel Shine, Shine, Shine. Lydia lives in Virginia with her husband and children, whom she homeschools. Apparently, she is also a guitar player and chief of the  watermelon police! Sounds like a person we all want to meet.

Shine, Shine, Shine is a "shocking, searing, breathless love story" about a modern family, that explores what it means to be human. Per Kelly Justice, owner of Fountain Bookstore, "I love this book. Everyone I know in the industry loves this book. You will love this book." Sounds like it's too good to miss.

Refreshments begin at 10:30 and child care is provided. Don't miss out on this last book review of the summer.

Alpha Offered in Fall 2012

Alpha has been a part of the life and fabric of Reveille the past two years. Participants Alpha 2012 have included those who are completely new to the Christian faith as well as those who have been professing Christians. Alpha is an ideal opportunity for Reveille members to invite their friends and family members to join them in this 10-week course as they explore together what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

The Alpha website describes the course as follows:

The Alpha Course is a practical introduction to the Christian faith, a place where guests have an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The course usually meets once per week for 10 weeks and includes a day or weekend getaway in the middle. Each session, people enjoy great food, laughter and learning about the teachings of Jesus in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile. There is no charge to attend the Alpha course.

If you are interested in learning more about Alpha plan to come to the introductory dinner on Wednesday, August 29 at 6:00 p.m. The Alpha classes will begin on Tuesday evening, September 11. Child care will be provided. If you have questions, please contact Burdette Robinson, Alpha Coordinator, here or Rev. Carol Uzzle here or by phone at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Holy Land Experience Opportunity in 2013

Come Join Us

Having been blessed by several experiences in the Holy Land, I am pleased to invite you to join me in Israel in February 2013. Working with the staff of Educational Holy Land trip Opportunities, I have been able to customize what I believe will be an extraordinary learning experience. In particular, I am pleased to say that our guide will be the Rev. Dr. Steve Rettenmeyer, a colleague with deep knowledge of both the land and the Bible.

This would be wonderful enough, but I believe that this trip will be much more. As we walk in the footsteps of Jesus and explore the land in which he called and challenged his disciples, the Bible will come alive as never before. This will be an opportunity for spiritual renewal that will, in some cases, change lives. I encourage you to give prayerful consideration to joining me and the Rev. Laughton Corr, who has a wealth of experience in Israel, on this journey of a lifetime. Brochures about this trip are available in the narthex, welcome center and by request from the church office. For further information, please see Rev. Corr at church or call me at 359-6041, ext. 112.

In Christ,

Jim Noland, D. Min.
