 TopAnnual Conference 2012

Since the days of John Wesley Methodists have gathered to Annual Conference 2012 logopray, worship, and plan. This year the tradition continues as the Virginia Annual Conference meets in Roanoke on Friday through Sunday, June 22-24. Reveille sends six persons to the Annual Conference: Our three Virginia Conference clergy - Jim Noland, Stephen Coleman, and Carol Uzzle (Abby Kocher is a member of the Western North Carolina Conference); and three lay members - Ruby Corr, Dick Davis and Margaret Hamilton. Please keep these persons and the Annual Conference in your prayers.

Summer Book Review Series

June 27

Fellowship Hall

Summer is here and that means it's time for our 48th year of Reveille's summer book review series to begin. On June 27, Matt Mercy Creek photoMatthews is coming to speak on his first novel, Mercy Creek.

Matt was born near Hampton, Virginia, attended Virginia Commonwealth University and Union Seminary in Richmond, and is now pastor/head of staff at St. Giles Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

Mercy Creek is set on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It is the story of 16-year-old Isaac's coming-of-age summer in a small town. Mercy Creek won the South Carolina Arts Commission First Novel Prize in 2011 and received rave reviews.

We will have refreshments at 10:30 a.m., and the book review by Matt begins at 11:00 a.m. Child care will be provided. There will be books available for sale and for signing. We hope to see you there!

Holy Land Experience Opportunity in 2013

Come Join Us

Having been blessed by several experiences in the Holy Land, I am pleased to invite you to join me in Israel in February 2013. Working with the staff of Educational Holy Land tripOpportunities, I have been able to customize what I believe will be an extraordinary learning experience. In particular, I am pleased to say that our guide will be the Rev. Dr. Steve Rettenmeyer, a colleague with deep knowledge of both the land and the Bible.

This would be wonderful enough, but I believe that this trip will be much more. As we walk in the footsteps of Jesus and explore the land in which he called and challenged his disciples, the Bible will come alive as never before. This will be an opportunity for spiritual renewal that will, in some cases, change lives. I encourage you to give prayerful consideration to joining me and the Rev. Laughton Corr, who has a wealth of experience in Israel, on this journey of a lifetime. Brochures about this trip are available in the narthex and by request from the church office. For further information, please see Rev. Corr in church or contact me at 359-6041, ext. 112.

In Christ,

Jim Noland, D. Min.

Help Feed the Homeless

BAG LUNCHES - June 24

The bag lunches for Richmond Friends of the Homeless will be prepared during Sunday school on June 24 by our elementary children in room 200 and not in the fellowship hall. Friends of the Homeless 60%If you would like to contribute food for the bag lunches, please contact Carol Uzzle here.

                              HOT MEAL - June 28

As summer begins, the crowds multiply at the site where we serve the Friends of the Homeless hot meal. More than ever we need your help. For Thursday, June 28, we ask that you help us provide 12 potato casseroles (Yes, that number has grown.) and home-baked desserts. We also need people to serve the meal. Everyone who has volunteered for this job comes away feeling really good about the experience. Can you spare two hours that day? Sign-up sheets, recipes and delivery instructions are near the bulletin boards in the main hallway of the education building and in fellowship hall. Please contact Joanna Tilley here  with questions. Child care is available if you contact Rev. Carol Uzzle here or by phone at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Remember Those Serving in the Military

Last month, those serving in the armed services were included in the care packages sent to our college students. Carol Anne Estes' daughter Lisa and her husband, Steven Bradshaw, are serving in Afghanistan on separate bases. They will be in Virginia later this summer on R&R (rest and recuperation). Below is a portion of a note written by Lisa:

Receiving packages and mail "is the biggest morale booster here where we have very little to amuse us....Thank you for supporting the men and women serving in the military. I appreciate your generosity and thoughtfulness. Thank you for sending a care package to my husband. This deployment has been difficult for us as we're on separate bases, but e-mail and Skype help us stay connected."

We give thanks for those serving in the military and pray for the day when they will return home to their families. We are certain your prayers and a note to them from time to time will be greatly appreciated. Military Mail

If you have family members who are serving in the military, please contact Carol Uzzle, Minister for Teaching and Learning, here or 359-6041, ext. 117. With their permission we will also print their mailing address.
