TopStephen Ministry Celebrates

20 Years at Reveille

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Stephen Ministry here at Reveille United Methodist Church. Not long after he was hired as Minister for Congregational Care, Hardy Tippett trained the first class of Stephen Ministers, which contained 16 people. In its twenty years, Reveille has trained over 70 members to become Stephen Ministers as well as sent Kay Rice, Pat Hackler, Jack Hart, Stephen Coleman, Ashley Willis, Wendi Black and Brant Smith for additional training to be Stephen Ministry leaders. Stephen Ministers listen, explore feelings, pray, and share God's love with people who experience difficult times such as grief, hospitalization, divorce, aging and any type of crisis. They are not counselors but more than just a casual friend. Currently, Reveille has 15 active Stephen Ministers ready to help. Reveille United Methodist Church has done much to support Stephen Ministry through these many years. In confidential, quiet and unknown ways, our church has cared and helped countless people.

On Sunday May 6, Reveille will celebrate 20 years of Stephen Ministry at all three worship services. Our active Stephen Ministers will serve as greeters, lay readers, and communion servers. We will recognize former Stephen Ministers, whom we have invited to join us for this special day. After the 11:00 a.m. worship service, everyone is invited to continue our celebration with a reception in the fellowship hall. We hope you will join us for this special day.

Looking Ahead to May 13 Worship

Youth Lead on the Journey of Faith

Abram and Sarai left their home and moved to a new land that God had given them. Jesus walked many miles during his ministry, gathering followers along the way. And John Wesley traveled as much as 250,000 miles on horseback during his ministry. We, too, walk through our days, and God is present where we work, when we study, when we gather with family and friends. Next Sunday the youth will lead worship at The Point (9:30 a.m.) and at 11:00 a.m., considering their own journey of faith. In scripture, music, and testimony, they will share the stony hills and smooth paths of the Christian faith, and where God is in all of it.

Youth Auction Achievements

Right-Click on the filename below to download this image and choose "Save Target As" or "Save Link As"

Thank you to all who supported the youth by bidding on and purchasing auction items. We have earned over $5,200 on the auction, and with dinner proceeds, nearly $6,000. We have a few things left that we would like to offer folks. Cliff Bruce Photography was very generous and donated nine items to our auction. We have three gift certificates for senior portraits, three for newborn photos and three for family portraits. These all include the sitting fee and a free portrait. For senior and newborn sessions, you receive a free 5x7; for a family sitting, a free 8x10. There is no expiration date on these, but if you were to purchase a certificate, he would like a call in the next few weeks just letting him know that you have it. The values of these items are $170, $240 and $390 respectively. We are asking for a mere $100 for each of these. Cliff does beautiful work. You may check out his website here. Please contact Dwayne Stinson here or 359-6041, ext. 122 if you would like to purchase one of these. Again, all of the funds will go towards our youth mission trips this summer. Thank you for your support.

History Repeats Itself: Setting the Cornerstone

Approximately 60 years ago, the congregations of Monument Methodist Church and Union Station Methodist Church celebrated a monumental moment - the consolidation of their separate churches into one, Reveille Methodist Church, with the laying of the cornerstone on their beautiful new church. In 1967, Reveille became Reveille United Methodist Church with the merger of the United Brethren and Methodist denominations. A prayer in the United Methodist hymnal from A Book of Public Prayer underlines the meaning of our church cornerstone:

"O God, you have built your Church

Upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone."

-  Harry Emerson Fosdick

On Sunday, May 20, 2012, the cornerstone for the new expansion will be laid following the 11:00 worship service. What a wonderful opportunity to blend the recognition of new Reveille members and their faith commitment of worship and service to God with recognition of this new space for use in worship and service to God. With receipt of the occupancy permit, a reception hosted by the Women of Spirit small group will follow in the welcome center that will make this occasion our official opening.

Please mark your calendars and plan to be a part of this historic moment in Reveille's history and tour the new building we have been excitedly following for months.

Mission Benefit Concert 2012

Mission Benefit ConcertReveille's annual Mission Benefit Concert will be held on Sunday, May 20, at 7:00 p.m. We are thrilled to have the chancel choir from Shady Grove United Methodist Church (Mechanicsville) join our own chancel choir in singing John Rutter's Requiem, featuring Reveille soloists, Kara Wiseman and Olletta Cheatham. This popular masterwork will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra with Cathy Armistead on the organ and conducted by Shady Grove's Director of Music, Bryan Greer. Anthems by Alice Parker and Byron J. Smith will also be offered. They include a duet by Reginald Potts, IV and Kevin Boteler. This concert will begin with music by the Reveille Ensemble and Reveille Ringers.

Our beneficiaries this year are Reveille's summer youth missions and Swansboro Elementary School. Over 60 Reveille youth will be involved in four summer youth missions, which include two weeks at Jeremiah Project, and the El Salvador and Eastern Shore Habitat for Humanity trips. We have been a partner in mission with Swansboro Elementary School for several years and are currently working with Reveille church member, Laura Holdych, as champion for Swansboro. Both missions represent many opportunities to be in service for Christ. If you would like to make a donation, click here to find the donation form. Paper copies of the donation form are available in the church office.
