  TopGeneral Conference of

The United Methodist Church

April 24 - May 4

The United Methodist Church's top legislative body, the General Conference, is currently gathered in Tampa, Florida. General Conference meets every four years and is the only entity that speaks for The United Methodist Church. Delegates from around the world gather to set policy and direction for the church, as well as handle other business. This year there are 988 delegates. The theme of the 2012 conference is Make Disciples of Jesus Christ to Transform the World. Two representatives from Reveille will be present for this important time of discernment for our denomination. Please keep in your prayers Beth Downs, who is attending as a delegate from the Virginia Annual Conference, and Lauren Austin, who is attending as an observer and volunteer. If you would like to follow online, click here.

History Repeats Itself: Setting the Cornerstone

Approximately 60 years ago, the congregations of Monument Methodist Church and Union Station Methodist Church celebrated a monumental moment - the consolidation of their separate churches into one, Reveille Methodist Church, with the laying of the cornerstone on their beautiful new church. In 1967, Reveille became Reveille United Methodist Church with the merger of the United Brethren and Methodist denominations. A prayer in the United Methodist hymnal from A Book of Public Prayer underlines the meaning of our church cornerstone:

"O God, you have built your Church

Upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone."

-  Harry Emerson Fosdick

On Sunday, May 20, 2012, the cornerstone for the new expansion will be laid following the 11:00 worship service. What a wonderful opportunity to blend the recognition of new Reveille members and their faith commitment of worship and service to God with recognition of this new space for use in worship and service to God. With receipt of the occupancy permit, a reception hosted by the Women of Spirit small group will follow in the welcome center that will make this occasion our official opening.

Please mark your calendars and plan to be a part of this historic moment in Reveille's history and tour the new building we have been excitedly following for months.

-  Claire Kaugars
