GPS - GoPrayStudyTop

Last Sunday the first GPS was available as an insert in the bulletin. Each week during Lent, and continuing into the foreseeable future, Reveille is distributing a weekly GPS (Go, Pray, Study) guide as a tool for daily discipleship in preparation for worship the following Sunday. The GPS is provided to assist people in their spiritual development for loving, knowing and serving God. It is part of a spiritual journey that we are taking together here, with readings designed to prepare the church community for Sunday worship.

Youth Group News 65%Who am I? It is a question most youth and adults ask at one time or another and that Christians must constantly ask. The question really is "Who is it that God has made me to be?" For Lent, the youth group will participate in a study called "the me I want to be," which wrestles with just these questions. This Sunday, February 26, we will focus on "the me I don't want to be." We will consider the ways in which we attempt to be someone other than the people God created us to be.

Our schedule is normal:

     4:30 p.m. - Middle school youth group/high school choir

     5:30 p.m. - Dinner for middle school

     6:00 p.m. - High school youth group/middle school choir

Would you like to spend Lent growing closer to God? Sign up to be part of a Lenten small group. We hope to offer groups for middle school and high school students at times and in locations that suit the most participants. Contact Dwayne here for more information.

Middle school youth: Next Sunday is the final deadline to sign up for Journey. This retreat has replaced Fan The Flame and is sponsored by the Jeremiah Project. The speaker is nationally recognized speaker and author, Scott Rubin, pastor of junior high youth at Willow Creek Church in Illinois. To register, send a check for $120 to Dwayne by March 4. For more information, check out this.

High school students: To sign up for the summer mission trip to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, please send $100, a student waiver, and an emergency medical form to Dwayne in the church office by April 1. The trip is August 5-11, 2012 and we will work with Habitat for Humanity. More details are available at youth group.

Lenten Resources

Lent is the perfect time to practice spiritual disciplines. Below are resources that families may want to examine and use:

Check out these articles in the March issue of Pockets, the Upper Room devotional book for children, which is available in the main hallway of the education building:

  • Do 1 Thing, page 8
  • Pocketsful of Scripture, page 14
  • Lenten Prayer Calendar, page 35
  • Family Time: Lenten Practices, page 48

Additional resources may be available in March at http://pockets.upperroom.org.

2012 Family Lenten Study includes a scripture reading, symbol, discussion and activity guide and closing prayer for Lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

If you need a refresher course on Lent, check out this from the Upper Room publication AliveNow. You will find basic information concerning this season of the church year along with a list entitled TOP TEN THINGS YOU CAN TRY FOR THE LENTEN SEASON. This top ten is worth considering!

Available at the church are copies of the Lenten devotion booklet produced yearly by the residents of Westminster-Canterbury, here in Richmond. Look for copies in the fellowship hall, narthex and church office.

Donations for Richmond Friends of the Homeless

Richmond Friends of the Homeless needs your help. Area churches serve a hot meal daily at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. It is hard to predict how many folks will be served each day. At times, there are leftovers, and the leftovers are packaged up and given to families in the area. Richmond Friends of the Homeless is always in need of gallon-size bags and plastic Tupperware-like containers to package these leftovers. Also needed are 55-gallon trash bags. If you would like to donate any of these items, there will be a collection area by the elevator (on the red carpet) for you to place these items. Your donations are much appreciated.

Mentors Needed at Swansboro

Swansboro Elementary School has asked for Reveille members to prayerfully consider giving a minimal amount of time to the many at-risk students at the school. You can help by attending a 3-hour mentor training session one evening at Reveille. After the training session, you can begin to work with a student at the school and make a difference in that child's life. In just one hour a week, you can help a child with homework, read to them, or just share stories.

There are 330 children at the school of which 90% are "known" to social services; all need mentors. Currently Reveille provides eight mentors, and other groups provide an additional 20. Please consider the training session to see if mentoring at Swansboro would be right for you. For more information, dates and times, please contact Laura Holdych here or call 921-2800.

Swansboro Needs Readers on March 2

Friday, March 2 is Read Across America Day, a nationally recognized day that coincides with Dr. Seuss' birthday. Schools all over the country have parents visiting classrooms to read. Unfortunately, Swansboro has very little parent involvement, so the school has asked Reveille members and friends to consider visiting one or two classrooms that day to read a book to a class. Readers are encouraged to come between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, but other times that day can also be arranged. There are 21 classrooms that would greatly benefit from readers. The school is just over 5 miles from Reveille and is convenient to downtown, as well. If you are able to visit the school on March 2 to help, or if you have questions, please contact Laura Holdych here or call 921-2800.

United Methodist General Conference

April 23-May 4 in Tampa, Florida

We hope that you will include the upcoming General Conference of our church in your prayers. The Upper Room, a division of General Board of Discipleship (GBOD), has produced a prayer guide called 50 Days of Prayerwhich is available as an e-book, PDF download and a regular-print book. Click on the title to check it out. The daily devotionals begin on March 16.

This guide will allow us to actively support the spiritual preparation needed before the General Conference and intercede faithfully during the ten days of the Conference. The kingdom of God comes through prayer and discernment. Through use of this resource, we unite in prayer for God's will to be done in God's way and in God's time (reprinted from Upper Room website).

Additional information concerning General Conference is available here.
