TopLent begins with

Ash Wednesday Service

February 22, 7:00 p.m.

Lent is a period of 40 days, not including Sundays, when we are encouraged to engage in reflection and penitence in preparation for Easter. It is a time to reflect upon our mortality and on our need for the saving grace that comes to us in Christ Jesus. Plan to start Lent with this solemn service in the sanctuary next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Reveille Today

Youth Group News 65%At youth group this Sunday night, February 19, we will prepare and serve dinner to our CARITAS guests. Our schedule is normal:

4:30 p.m. - Middle school youth group/high school choir

5:30 p.m. - Dinner for middle school ($3, paid to Dwayne)

6:00 p.m. - High school youth group/middle school choir

Please note that dinner this Sunday will not be part of the pre-paid Sunday night suppers. We use the youth's contribution to offset the cost of the meal they share with the CARITAS guests. Please pay Dwayne directly.

Would you like to spend Lent growing closer to God? Sign up to be part of a Lenten small group. We hope to offer groups for middle school and high school students at times and in locations that suit the most participants. For more information, contact Dwayne here or 359-6041, ext. 122.

Middle school youth: If you are interested in attending Journey, a retreat for middle schoolers, please sign up by March 4. This event has replaced Fan The Flame and is sponsored by the Jeremiah Project. The speaker is nationally-recognized speaker and author, Scott Rubin, pastor for junior high youth at Willow Creek Church in Illinois. To register, send a check for $120 to Dwayne by March 4. For more information, check out this.

High school students: To sign up for the summer mission trip to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, please send $100, a student waiver, and an emergency medical form to Dwayne in the church office by April 1. We will work with Eastern Shore Habitat for Humanity August 5-11, 2012. More details are available at youth group.

Introducing CARITAS Works:

A Gateway from Homelessness to Employment

CARITAS Works provides intensive, innovative and life transforming career preparation and permanent job placement services to motivated individuals referred by Richmond's homeless services system.

WHO WE ARE

Most of our students are clients of The Healing Place, a homeless shelter/substance abuse recovery program in Southside Richmond. They are people who have made mistakes, have learned from those mistakes, and are asking for a chance to have a better life through the promise of employment. Those who graduate from CARITAS Works are committed and motivated to take critical steps toward a stable and sustainable lifestyle. Since our program's inception in January 2011, about 70% of our 88 graduates have secured transitional or regular employment within 60 days.

WHAT WE DO

We offer a 5-week training regimen that focuses on personal and professional development. Our job search curriculum includes classes in basic computer skills, resume writing, interviewing techniques and professional networking. We also offer "Transformations" classes where students learn forgiveness, accountability, conflict management, teamwork, and leadership.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Most importantly, we need hiring organizations to give our graduates consideration. Our CARITAS Works graduates are positioned for success but need someone to give them a chance - a hand up - and the opportunity to transform their lives. We also need volunteers to offer their time and talents to help with resume writing, mock interviewing, or serving as a classroom instructor. Finally, we need donations of gently-used business clothes or help with organizing our clothing room as donations arrive. To volunteer, please contact Julie Johnson here or at 343-5008, ext.406.

Help Feed the Homeless

HOT MEAL

Richmond's homeless population needs us this Thursday, February 23, when we will serve a hot meal at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. You can help by providing a cooked potato casserole. The recipe, with drop-off instructions, can be picked up from the sign-up board near the welcome center or in the fellowship hall. Homemade desserts (brownies, cookies, etc.) are also greatly appreciated.

Friends of the Homeless 60%You can also help by being one of the servers for an hour or two. You may meet us at Reveille at 10:45 a.m. and carpool or meet us at the site. If needed, child care is available while serving the meal. To request child care, please contact Carol Uzzle here or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117.

For more information about Reveille's participation with Friends of the Homeless, please call Mary Jane Walls at 355-4479 or e-mail her here.

BAG LUNCHES

We will be packing bag lunches at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall on Sunday, February 26. We need children, youth and adults to help prepare the 160 bag lunches and sandwiches. If you would like to contribute food or products for the bag lunches, please contact Jennifer Huneycutt here. Each month the following items are needed: baloney, juice boxes, small bags of chips, individually-wrapped desserts, fruit, extra large lunch bags, and sandwich bags.

Policy and Procedures for Reveille Communications Adopted by Church Council

Church Council, through its Communications Committee, recently adopted a communications policy to govern information distributed by Reveille. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that important information about church programs, activities and events is provided to our members and guests in a timely and consistent manner. The communications policy and related procedures describe the various communication forms - both print and electronic, identifies the person or group responsible for receiving information, and provides the deadlines by which information is to be submitted. Anyone providing publicity information to the church should read and follow the communications policy and procedures, which are available on request by e-mail here or can be sent via regular mail. For additional information, please contact the chair of the Communications Committee, Glenda Lewis, here or Rev. Dr. Jim Noland here or 359-6041, ext. 112.

Are You Practicing 5-10-5?

Remember the 5-10-5 rule that Rev. Tom Arthur shared with us on Ministry Sunday in January? We can offer God's love by warmly welcoming visitors to our church each Sunday using this rule, which calls us to spend the 5 minutes before the service starts, and the 5 minutes after the service ends greeting anyone we don't know within 10 feet of us. It's a wonderful way to share God's love each Sunday morning, and you can get to know some great new people in the process. Please consider making 5-10-5 a part of your weekly spiritual discipline.

Do You Have the Gift of Hospitality?

We are actively looking for greeters for the 8:30 and 11:00 services. If you have a welcoming spirit and a ready smile, you might just be one of the right people for this ministry. Each greeter is asked to serve at one Sunday service every three months. If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, please contact Cheryl Arrington here or 359-6041, ext. 114.

Ushers for 8:30 and 11:00 Services Needed

In addition to greeters (see article above), we are also seeking several men, women and older youth to serve as ushers at either the 8:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. worship service. If you have a pleasant smile, can pass out worship bulletins, show members and guests to their seats and carry an offering plate, this could be the area of service for you. If you will volunteer to be part of this ministry, please contact Cheryl Arrington here or 359-6041, ext. 114.

American Youth Harp Concert at Reveille

 Harp

We have a very special opportunity this Friday, February 24: the American Youth Harp Ensemble will present a concert in our sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. This will be one of only four preparatory concerts as they get ready to perform at Carnegie Hall on the first weekend in March. One of Reveille's members, Dan Christman, performs with this group.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear this group perform and also be part of their send-off team. There is no charge for the concert, but free-will donations will be accepted gratefully at the door. Plan to arrive early; a large audience is expected.
