Date Night

TopA Night Out on the Town

Have you waited too long to make your Valentine's Day plans? Reveille's youth have a solution for you: Join other Reveille couples for a date night on February 17. For $50 per couple, you will enjoy a gourmet meal, live music and dancing, and great fellowship with others from Reveille. Tickets are available for sale on Sunday morning in the hallway and fellowship hall, or by contacting Dwayne Stinson here  or 359-6041, ext. 122.

Are You Practicing 5-10-5?

During his Ministry Sunday sermon, Tom Arthur called us to be a congregation that shares God's love by warmly welcoming visitors to our church each Sunday. He gave us a great tool to use to help us achieve that goal: the 5-10-5 rule. This rule calls us to spend the 5 minutes before the service starts, and the 5 minutes after the service ends greeting anyone we don't know within 10 feet of us. It's a wonderful way to share God's love each Sunday morning, and you can get to know some great new people in the process. Please consider making 5-10-5 a part of your weekly spiritual discipline.

Do You Have the Gift of Hospitality?

As we prepare to expand into our beautiful new building, we are also preparing to expand our greeter ministry. We are actively looking for new people to join this vital ministry, to greet people as they enter the church and help new visitors feel welcome here at Reveille. We need greeters for both the 8:30 and 11:00 services, and we are asking each person to serve one Sunday every three months. If you are interested in becoming a part of the greeter ministry, please contact Cheryl Arrington here or 359-6041, ext. 114.

Ushers for 8:30 and 11:00 Services Needed

In addition to greeters (see article above), we are also seeking several men, women and older youth to serve as ushers at either the 8:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. worship service. If you have a pleasant smile, can pass out worship bulletins, show members and guests to their seats and carry an offering plate, this could be the area of service for you. If you will volunteer to be part of this ministry, please contact Cheryl Arrington here or 359-6041, ext. 114.

Small Groups Can Help Faith Grow

In the early days of the Methodist Movement, John Wesley knew the faith needed to be nurtured in the lives of those who were new Christians if they were to mature in their journey as Jesus' disciples. Small groups developed, then and now, as a means of helping one another to grow in the faith. At Reveille we encourage everyone to become a part of a small group. Small groups have grown out of Alpha, Journey 101 classes, Bible studies and as individuals expressed an interest in being connected to a small group. Currently there are small groups meeting on Sunday morning, Sunday evening and through the week. To learn more about Reveille's small groups, contact Keith Thompson here or Carol Uzzle here or at 359-6941, ext. 117.

Youth Group News 65%Are there questions you have always wanted to ask your parents, but haven't? This Sunday night, February 12, you will have your chance. We will have a panel of Reveille parents at youth group, and youth will be able to ask questions, anonymously, of the parents, and parents will in turn have a chance to learn more about what teenagers think. Start thinking of your questions now.

Would you like to spend Lent growing closer to God? Sign up to be part of a Lenten small group. We hope to offer groups for middle school and high school students, at times and in locations that suit the most participants. For more information, contact Dwayne here.

Middle school youth: If you are interested in attending Journey, a retreat for middle schoolers, please sign up by March 4. This event has replaced Fan The Flame, and is sponsored by the Jeremiah Project. The speaker is nationally recognized speaker and author, Scott Rubin, junior high pastor at Willow Creek Church. We Can Help the Homeless through CARITAS

During the week of February 18-25, Reveille will welcome families from CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter). We know that by preparing meals, leading evening activities, driving guests to showers, or staying overnight, we are providing people facing crisis the food and shelter they need to survive and showing them the hope and love of God. But are we actually helping them break the cycle of homelessness?

YES. As a host congregation, we serve as the first step in a long process toward recovery and healing through CARITAS. While we provide the basic necessities for survival, look what else goes on at CARITAS:

Every child is enrolled in school within 24 hours upon admittance to CARITAS.

  • All guests are assigned a case manager, who works individually with them to work through whatever legal, mental, medical, educational, or emotional barriers stand between them and self-sufficiency.
  • Case managers work actively to help guests find employment.
  • Every guest is required to open an escrow account, into which 75% of all income earned must be saved. This money enables them to save for a deposit on an apartment.
  • All guests have access to free substance-abuse counseling.
  • Guests participate in parenting, nutrition, home economics, and conflict-resolution classes.
  • Upon exiting homelessness and entering a home of their own, guests have access to the CARITAS furniture bank, the only one of its kind in central Virginia. For a nominal fee, eligible individuals and families from 27 different organizations (including the Red Cross and Refugee and Immigration Services) can fill their new living space with the basic necessities it needs to truly be called a home.

For one week, we have the opportunity to prepare and serve dinner (5:00 - 7:00 p.m.), make bagged lunches (5:00 - 7:00 p.m.), lead evening activities (6:00 - 8:00 p.m.) drive guests to showers at First Baptist Church (6:30-8:30 p.m.), and stay overnight (9:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.). CARITAS is the largest and most inclusive emergency homeless shelter in Central Virginia.

For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Jennifer McCluskey here   or by phone, 928-6270.

Upcoming Lenten Bible Study:

Final Words From the Cross

For five Wednesdays during Lent, we will explore an exciting new study of the words Christ spoke from the cross. Our resource will be a video series prepared by Adam Hamilton, the pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. Jim and Jake Noland will facilitate our reflections on this crucial material and help us prepare for a deeper understanding of our Easter faith.

This study will follow Wonderful Wednesday Dinner from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. beginning February 29 and concluding March 28. Copies of this book will be available for purchase at a cost of $14.99, but purchase of the book is not required to participate in the study. Child care will be provided.

American Youth Harp Concert

Friday, February 24

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The story goes that the great pianist Arthur Rubinstein was in New York City and was approached by a man on the street who said, "Pardon me sir, how do I get to Carnegie Hall?" to which Rubenstein replied, "Practice, practice, practice." The American Youth Harp Ensemble knows this to be true, as on March 4, they will play their third concert at one of the most prestigious concertHarphalls in the world. "There is no experience that changes and shapes a young musician more profoundly than performing in a major venue such as Carnegie Hall," says Lynnelle Ediger-Kordzaia, the ensemble's founder and artistic director.

The American Youth Harp Ensemble will present three Carnegie Hall preview concerts in Richmond, one of which will be held in Reveille's sanctuary on Friday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. There is no charge for the concert, but free-will donations will be accepted gratefully at the door.

July 30 through August 3

Children age three though rising second graders will be diving in and discovering God's VBS 2012 logounderwater universe this summer. Vacation Bible School is set for the mornings of July 30 through August 3. The week will be filled with daily life lessons as each day the children go deeper into God's Word through Bible stories of people who revealed deep faith. The daily themes are depending on God, daring to care, claiming Jesus, choosing to follow Jesus, and changing the world.

Children entering grades 3-5 will participate in Day Camp. This is a week where the children not only study God's Word, but they live out the scriptures in concrete acts of service.
