TopSouper Bowl Will Help the Homeless

More than 20 years ago the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a prayer by a teen in a local church. "Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat." Since that day, more than $81 million Souper Bowlhas been raised for local charities across the United States through SouperBowl of Caring.

Receiving a Souper Bowl of Caring offering following each of the worship services began at Reveille in 2003, and the tradition continues this Sunday, February 5. Look for third, fourth and fifth graders with black soup kettles. Your contribution of a few dollars, or even your loose change, will combine with contributions of others to provide meals for those served by Richmond Friends of the Homeless.

This local feeding program was introduced to our church in 2002 when the children of summer day camp served a hot meal for Friends of the Homeless. Last year, through your generosity, $1,008.85 was given to Richmond Friends of the Homeless. Any amount will help.

Immersion Bible Study: Acts

The Immersion Bible Study engages participants in the following ways:

  • Claiming the story through stories and questions and thinking about your own life with its struggles and joys;
  • Entering the Bible story by exploring scripture and considering what God is saying to us;
  • Living the story by reflecting on what you have discovered and putting it into practice in daily life.

The study of Acts covers the early history of the church from Pentecost and persecution to the travels of Paul and other early missionaries, with major attention paid to Paul.

This study begins on Sunday, February 12 at 5:00 p.m. Andy Weaver is leading the study. Participants are encouraged to use the new Common English Bible, which will be available for purchase at the cost of $9. The study book cost is also $9.

Register today online here or contact Rev. Carol Uzzle at 359-6041, ext. 117. Child care will be provided.

Altar Decorations During Lent Explained

Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter. It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Eve (sometimes called Holy Saturday). If you look on a calendar and count the days, they come to more than 40. This is because the Sundays in Lent are not counted.

For Christians, Lent is a time to prepare for Easter and to think about their relationship with God. It represents the 40 days when Jesus was tempted in the desert. During this time he didn't eat or drink anything. Because of this, some Christians give up favorite foods or drinks for this time.

During Lent, the altar is covered with a purple cloth. Purple is traditionally the color of royalty and having a purple cloth on the altar helps people remember that Jesus is king. There are no flowers or any other decorations displayed in the church, thus saving flowers and "new life" for Easter Sunday and the resurrection. Our Worship Committee has made the decision to observe this tradition again this year. Altar arrangements will consist of greens, pods, and berries arranged in a lovely fashion. Traditional displays of palms and lilies will be in the sanctuary on Palm Sunday and Easter.

Would you like to sponsor an altar arrangement during Lent? Just as with other Sundays, those wishing to honor or memorialize someone by sponsoring a particular Sunday during Lent, may do so by calling Cheryl Arrington at 359-6041, ext. 114. You will be reminded that no flowers will appear on these Sundays, and you will be asked if you would like to take the arrangement of greens with you after the 11:00 a.m. service.  If you want to take the arrangement, the designer will make it portable directly following the service. With our talented designers preparing these sanctuary altar decorations during the weeks of Lent, these arrangements will be no less beautiful than our usual weekly flowers. The following dates have not yet been reserved: March 11, March 18, March 25, and the arrangement of palms on the altar for April 1.

Responding to Grace

During our stewardship pledge campaign last October we talked a lot about moments of grace and the difference those moments make in people's lives. Your enthusiastic response to the stewardship campaign call has certainly been one of those moments.

Our 2012 pledge budget goal is $1,162,000. So far we've raised $1,080,000, an amount well ahead of the pace from last year. During this pledge campaign we've talked about the possibility of a budget shortfall of $120,000. But through your generosity, pledges we've received so far have already reduced that shortfall to $82,000.  We are truly on our way to helping fulfill Reveille's ongoing vision: "Making a Transformative Difference in God's World."

Our hope is that over the coming weeks those who have not yet pledged will prayerfully consider pledging and we'll be able to raise the additional $82,000 needed to reach our budget goal. The more pledges we realize, the more informed and efficient our 2012 planning will be, allowing us to fully support our ministry and outreach programs in service to others. For your convenience, there are 2012 pledge cards in the pew racks and they can be returned in the offering plate on Sunday morning or mailed directly to the church office. If you have questions, please call the church office at 359-6041.

There are so many moments of grace, both large and small, that are part of our lives here at Reveille, in our community and around the world. With our new building space opening and our planned ministry and outreach programs, 2012 promises to be another exciting and difference-making year. Our shared support of Reveille's ministry and outreach programs enables us to serve others in the name of Christ, and we greatly appreciate your efforts in making that happen.

In faith,

Your Stewardship Committee

American Youth Harp Concert

Friday, February 24

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The story goes that the great pianist Arthur Rubinstein was in New York City and was approached by a man on the street who said, "Pardon me sir, how do I get to Carnegie Hall?" to which Rubenstein replied, "Practice, practice, practice." The American Youth Harp Ensemble knows this to be true, as on March 4, they will play their third concert at one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. "There is no experience that changes and shapes a young musician more Harpprofoundly than performing in a major venue such as Carnegie Hall," says Lynnelle Ediger-Kordzaia, the ensemble's founder and artistic director.

The American Youth Harp Ensemble will present three Carnegie Hall preview concerts in Richmond, one of which will be held in Reveille's sanctuary on Friday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. Special guests - beloved soprano, Anne O'Byrne, and Earl Yowell, renowned former St. Paul chamber Orchestra percussionist - will also perform with the ensemble. There is no charge for the concert, but free-will donations will be accepted gratefully at the door.
