Where Are Your Roots?
A sower went out to sow. He scattered seeds all around him, passing his hands back and forth letting the seeds scatter from right to left, left to right. Seeds fell in the path, on the weedy, unplowed ground, and of course, on the tilled and fertile soil. Still the sower scattered the seed abundantly, knowing that he had more than plenty to share.
The sower is God, who scatters the word among us generously, even gr atuitously. Our lavish God wants to make sure there is more than enough seed for all, whether or not we are ready to accept it, allow it to grow in us and nurture its growth. This Sunday, January 22, is Ministry Sunday. Our guest preacher, Reverend Tom Arthur, will share the message of God's over-generosity and of our responsibility to receive the seed of God's word as graciously as God offers it.
Tom will share the message at all three services on Sunday morning and will lead youth group Sunday evening. He served as the summer pastoral intern at Reveille in 2006, when he was a student at Duke Divinity School. He returns now as pastor of Sycamore Creek Church in Lansing, Michigan. His wife Sarah continues to write and speak. Tom and Sarah expanded their family last fall with the birth of their son Micah. Please offer Tom a gracious welcome as he returns to Reveille.

Alpha
When asked to tell of their experience participating in the 10-week Alpha course, one person wrote:
"Alpha gave me a fresh perspective of Christianity in general and my own faith in particular. It challenged me to expand my senses of the power and possibilities of faith. It boosted my confidence to share and speak more openly about my beliefs, which I often tend to keep locked away inside myself. It renewed my sense of the strength that comes from community and fellowship. And Alpha reminded me that joy lies at the heart of relationship with God and Jesus Christ."
The next Alpha course begins on this Tuesday, January 24, with dinner at 6:00 p.m. The final session will be on March 27.
We hope you will join us as we explore the meaning of life and the Christian faith over the 10-week course. The evenings are designed to be relaxed, non-threatening, low key, friendly and fun. Alpha begins with a meal and is followed by a talk that looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith each week. Following the talk there is discussion in small groups. People stay in the same small group so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. The emphasis is on exploration and discovery in a relaxed and informal environment.
Alpha is a wonderful experience for those who are new to the faith and those who have grown up in the faith and are seeking to grow in their relationship with God.
Child care will be provided for each Alpha session and for the day retreat that will take place on Saturday, March 3. Registration is on line here. If you would like to learn more about Alpha or have questions, please contact Burdette Robinson here or call him at 837-7717; or contact Carol Uzzle here or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Help Feed the Homeless
BAG LUNCHES - SUNDAY, JANUARY 22
Come to the fellowship hall this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. to help prepare bag lunches for Richmond's homeless. If you would like to contribute food for the bag lunches contact Jennifer Huneycutt here.
HOT MEAL - THURSDAY, JANUARY 26
Thursday, January 26 is our day to help Richmond's Friends of the Homeless by serving a hot nourishing meal at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Jackson Ward. We hope you will sign up to make one of the 10 potato casseroles needed to serve 150 to 200 people. Sign-up sheets and recipes are near the welcome area and in fellowship hall.
Casseroles need to be made and baked at home and either dropped off in the fellowship hall walk-in refrigerator before January 26, or brought in hot that morning before 10:00 a.m. Please label your casserole with your name and FOH.
Homemade cookies, bars or cupcakes for dessert will be much appreciated. Please notify Joanna Tilley ahead of time as to what kind of goodie you can provide.
A Reveille small group is scheduled to serve the meal this month, but volunteers will be needed next month. Classes and other small groups may want to consider volunteering as a service project. It's fun and fits right into Reveille's mission statement.
For more information, please e-mail Joanna Tilley here or call her at 556-5935.

"What is a Hymn, Anyway?"
Led by Donna Fay Kessel
Our United Methodist Women (UMW) invite other ladies to join in them in the 10th annual Spiritual Life Retreat on Saturday morning, February 4, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The morning will be filled with good food, the fellowship of Christian women, moments of fun and laughter and the joy that hymns bring into our lives. Sunday Evening Bible Studies in February
Two new studies will be offered on Sunday evenings from 5:00 -7:00 p.m., beginning February 12. Please note that this is a week later than previously announced.
IMMERSION BIBLE STUDY - BOOK OF ACTS
Acts is the history book of the New Testament. Through this Immersion Bible Study, which will use the new Common English Bible, those taking the class will explore the rapid growth of the early church and become familiar with the missionary journeys of Paul and others who spread the Gospel. Andy Weaver will lead this exploration. The new Common English Bible will be available for purchase during the first session, along with the Immersion textbook.
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE TOGETHER: DISCERNMENT
Discernment, in this Living the Good Life study, is defined as "seeking God with all our senses - taste, sight, sound, smell and touch. It means using all our senses to discern the presence of God - and to do this with clarity. Such discernment informs wise actions in our daily lives." This class for six weeks will explore the meaning of discernment in our daily lives. The second half of this 12-week course will put into action what the class has been discussing and learning. Rev. Carol Uzzle will be facilitating the class.
You may register for both classes online here or by contacting Rev. Uzzle, at 359-6041, ext. 117 or here.
As with all classes, child care will be available for both courses.

First of Ten
On Sunday, January 29, you will hear the first of ten postludes given in concert style. You are invited to come up to the chancel and either be seated in the choir loft to enjoy t he sound or come closer to the organ to watch what goes on. The piece is "Cortege et Litanie," composed by French contemporary organist Marcel Dupré. Dupré is known for his challenging pedal technique, and in this piece he uses two-plane pedaling, where one foot crosses behind the other, and double pedaling, where two pedals play at the same time. This work is about six minutes long, so you will still be out in time go to Sunday school or lunch!
Next week: Did you know Reveille has one of the best pipe organs in town?

A Note of Thanks
Many thanks to all who helped adorn Reveille's Pair Tree this Christmas. The children, families, and staff of the Reveille Weekday School, Reveille Church families, and other generous souls helped deck the trees to overbrimming. In all, 150 pairs of gloves, 49 pairs of socks, 35 hats, 15 hat and glove sets, seven packs of underwear, three sets of earmuffs, and two scarves were donated. On January 3, these warm essentials were distributed to children in the Swansboro community, just in time for the first cold snap of the new year.
