Where Are Your Roots?
So, where are your roots? Perhaps you are remembering where your parents or grandparents originated, or your own country of origin. Perhaps you think first of a family homestead or recall memories from childhood of adults and peers who shaped you - places you went and experiences you shared. Over the first few weeks in January, Reveille's worship services will explore our Christian roots - how God nurtures and nourishes our growth and enables us to produce fruit that seeds new growth. This theme will culminate with Ministry Sunday on January 22, when guest preacher and former Reveille intern Rev. Tom Arthur will share the message.
This Sunday, January 8, begins the series with the waters of baptism. It is that water, or better still, God's presence in that gift of water, that nourishes our growth as disciples. An unwatered seed never sprouts. A seed immersed in water grows roots that seek more nourishment, and that nourishment allows the seed to sprout and grow. Every Christian's roots trace back to the waters of baptism. |

Ten for Ten
Happy New Year, Reveille! This month marks ten years of ministry at Reveille for me. I want to say "thank you" for allowing me this privilege in a tangible way: Beginning January 29, I will play a short "concert piece" as the postlude, and I invite you to come to the chancel to enjoy it, or you may stay wherever you are in the sanctuary (the balcony is the "best seat" in the house). It is my plan to give ten such postludes throughout the year, hence the name, "Ten for Ten." I hope you will enjoy this gift, given in love and gratitude.

Alpha
A 10-week Alpha course is being offered this winter on Tuesday evenings from January 24 - April 3. Each session begins with dinner at 6:00 p.m. Small group discussions follow a video focused on an aspect of faith. Through the small group, participants are able to ask questions and explore their faith in a supportive and encouraging environment. All are welcome to participate, from those who are new to the faith to those who would like the opportunity to examine and discuss their faith.
A recent Alpha participant wrote "My faith has been strong for years, but not very well informed and I felt almost afraid to open my heart and brain together to God. I now feel much braver, calmer. I feel more committed (and willing to be that way) and I am more disciplined about prayer and Bible reading/study."
Child care is provided each evening, as well as for the day retreat that takes place halfway through the course. If you would like to learn more about Alpha or have questions, please contact Burdette Robinson here or call him at 837-7717; or contact Carol Uzzle here or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117. You may register online here or by calling Carol.

Journey 101: Serving God
January 22 - February 26
On Sunday evenings beginning January 22 at 5:00 p.m. our associate pastor, Abby Kocher, will lead a 6-week class in the Journey 101 series. These classes will focus on serving God, exploring the following:
- Biblical background for service and social justice
- Use of financial gifts and resources for God's purposes
- Ways to become a better steward of time
- Ways of sharing personal faith stories
- Spiritual gifts and their role in serving God and others
This is the third of the Journey 101 courses. The classes are similar in design to the Alpha course. The other classes in this series are Journey 101: Loving God and Journey 101: Knowing God. The three classes are offered throughout the year and can be taken in any order. Child care will be available.
You may register online here or by contacting Carol Uzzle at 359-6041, ext. 117 or here.

Parables from the Back Side:
Bible Stories with a Twist
Wednesdays, January 11 - April 4
Most Christians have probably heard the parables of Jesus so many times that we can almost recite them verbatim. Sometimes we are too comfortable in our understanding of the parables. If you are looking for the opportunity to view 12 of Jesus' parables with new eyes, consider participating in the Wednesday morning ladies' Bible study that will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11. The 13-week study is entitled Parables from the Back Side: Bible Stories with a Twist. Each week the study will focus on the parable through the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character found in the parable. Those participating in this class will come away each week having viewed a parable they know by heart with new eyes. The study book costs $9. Child care will be available.
You may register online here or by contacting Carol Uzzle at 359-6041, ext. 117 or here.

Sunday Evening Bible Studies
Beginning February 4
On Sundays beginning February 4, we will offer two new Bible studies from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Each study has a resource book which costs less than $10. Child care will be provided.
IMMERSION BIBLE STUDY - BOOK OF ACTS
If you are interested in tracing the beginnings of the early church and seeing how the church grew under the ministry of Paul and others, you might like to participate in the February study of the Book of Acts, the history book of the New Testament. Andy Weaver will lead this 8-week exploration, which uses the new Common English Bible.
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE TOGETHER: DISCERNMENT
If you are looking for a small group experience with a twist, consider participating in this 12-week study. The first half - six weeks - is a time of discovery and preparation: Come and See. The group will apply their learnings to daily life during the last half of the class: Go and Do. Discernment is defined in this class "as seeking God with all our senses - taste, sight, sound, smell and touch. It means using all our senses to discern the presence of God - and to do this with clarity. Such discernment informs wise actions in our daily lives."
You may register for both classes online here or by e-mailing Carol Uzzle here. You may also call Carol at 359-6041, ext. 117 to register.
