 Born in a Barn

While growing up, if my sisters and I behaved rudely at the table, my mom would ask, "Were you born in a barn?"

Too often, rude behavior isn't restricted to meals. Even adults behave badly toward others, intentionally or unintentionally. Our lack of consideration, good manners and kindness might be likened to the behavior of animals, not guided by concepts of right and wrong.

Jesus was literally born in a barn because we sometimes act like we were born in a barn, failing to put others ahead of ourselves. Through Jesus, God willingly entered the mess and stink of human existence. We know that Jesus can relate to the lowest of human experience because he was laid into a feed trough for animals, surrounded by their sounds and smells. Born alongside us in the "barn" of earthly life, Jesus taught us not only politeness but love.

One day, when I dine with Jesus at the heavenly banquet, I trust Mom will be pleased with my table manners.

Year-End Giving

Are you planning to make donations to Reveille in late December that you plan to claim on your 2011 income tax return? If the answer is yes, following are the details that you need to know. Donations must be delivered or mailed and postmarked on or by December 31, 2011 in order to claim a charitable contribution deduction for 2011. Checks that are placed in the church offering during the first worship service in 2012 will not qualify for a charitable contribution deduction in 2011 even if the check is predated to 2011 or was actually written in 2011. However, checks that are written, mailed, and postmarked in 2011 will be deductible in 2011 though they are not received by Reveille until 2012. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Glynis Holcomb, financial manager, 359-6041, ext. 118.

Spiritual Growth Opportunities for the New Year

Short-term Bible studies which begin in January or February are outlined below. You may register online for the classes here, contact Carol Uzzle here or call Carol at 359-6041, ext. 117. She will be glad to register you for the class and answer your questions. Child care is provided for all classes.

PARABLES FROM THE BACK SIDE: BIBLE STORIES WITH A TWIST

The Women of Spirit Wednesday morning Bible study welcomes others to join them for their new 12-week study. They will be studying Parables from the Back Side: Bible Stories with a Twist beginning Wednesday, January 11, at 9:30 a.m. Participants will study 12 of the parables of Jesus through the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character in the parable. Those who have used this resource always are delighted at the new perspective they gain on these well-known parables.

JOURNEY 101: SERVING GOD

The path of discipleship moves us from loving God with our hearts to knowing God with our heads to serving God with our hands. Serving God is the third of the Journey 101 classes. The Journey 101 classes are similar in design to the Alpha Course. Abby Kocher, associate pastor, will lead the class beginning on Sunday, January 22, at 5:00 p.m. The class will explore

  • Biblical background for service and social justice
  • Use of financial gifts and resources for God's purposes
  • Ways you can become a better steward of your time
  • Ways of sharing your own faith story
  • Spiritual gifts and their role in serving God and others

Journey 101: Loving God and Journey 101: Knowing God will be offered later in the year. The classes can be taken in any order.

ALPHA

Alpha will be offered on Tuesday evenings from January 24 - April 3. The evening begins with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and ends by 8:00. Through video and small group discussion Alpha provides an opportunity to ask questions and explore one's faith. All are welcome to participate, from those who are new to the faith to those who would like the opportunity to examine and discuss their faith. If you would like to learn more about Alpha or have questions, please contact Burdette Robinson here, call him at 837-7717; or contact Carol Uzzle here or call here 359-6041, ext. 117.

IMMERSION BIBLE STUDY - BOOK OF ACTS

This eight-week study will meet on Sunday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. beginning February 5. The new Common English Bible is the Bible the class is using. Andy Weaver, who led the first Immersion Bible Study on the Gospel of Matthew, will provide leadership for this class.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE TOGETHER: DISCERNMENT

Looking for a different kind of small group experience? In the first six weeks of this 12-week class, participants explore discernment in the Come and See segment. During the last six weeks participants will have an opportunity to Go and Do as they apply their learnings to daily life. The class will begin on February 5, meeting from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The resource defines discernment "as seeking God with all our senses - taste, sight, sound, smell and touch. It means using all our senses to discern the presence of God - and to do this with clarity. Such discernment informs wise actions in our daily lives."
