Make an Advent Wreath at Wonderful Wednesday

November 30

The Advent wreath has become an important and visual reminder to all of us that each week as we light the candles in Sunday school classes, in worship, and in our homes we soon will be celebrating the birth of the Christ child.

The annual Advent wreath-making workshop will take place Wednesday, November 30, following the Wonderful Wednesday meal. It is a wonderful evening as families and friends create an Advent wreath to be used in their homes. There are special crafts for the children once they have completed their wreaths. The evening will conclude as a carol is sung and each Advent wreath is lit. Advent devotional booklets will be available for use at home.

The wreath kits, consisting of everything you need, will cost $10, and if you need only candles the cost will be $5. This is a popular event and we need to know how many supplies to order, so if you are planning to make an Advent wreath or you can provide fresh greenery, please contact Carol Uzzle here or 359-6041, ext. 117 by Monday, November 28. Child care for infants and toddlers will be available.

Our fellowship meal will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a menu of hamburger steak topped with onion straws and mushroom gravy, French fries, succotash, roll, Boston crme pie, and fruit. The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for anyone under 4. Reservations for dinner may be made by marking the fellowship pad in worship on Sunday, by calling the church office (359-6041) by 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, or by registering online here (www.reveilleumc.org).

Decorating for Advent

You are invited to join the Liturgical Arts Committee in preparing our church for the Hanging of the Greens 2season of Advent. Advent begins this Sunday, November 27, at which time we light the first candle on our Advent wreath. The following Saturday, December 3, at 9:00 a.m., we will gather in the sanctuary to put up all other decorations. There is a new 15 foot pre-lit Chrismon Tree to decorate, garlands and wreaths to hang, windows to decorate, and more. Although there is no official hanging of the greens service this year, all ages are encouraged to join in the fellowship and make the Committee's job lighter. Donuts, coffee and juice will be provided.

To enter the building on December 3, please use either the small door to the right of The Garth, which goes directly behind the sanctuary, or the double doors by the choir room (the doors closest to Reveille House).

For more information, please contact Margaret Hamilton here, or call 355-1908.

You may shop at Glorious Gifts in the fellowship hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sundays, Glorious Gifts logoDecember 4 and 11 or online now through December 16.

So far we have highlighted CARITAS, Stop Hunger Now, Friends of Barnabas Honduras Medical Mission Trip, and Westview Camperships. This week we highlight Friends of the Homeless and Rebuilding Together.

Friends of the Homeless

Richmond Friends of the Homeless is a private non-profit association devoted to making a difference in the lives of the less advantaged. It began over 20 years ago with one woman, Shawnee Hansen, serving lunch in south Richmond from the trunk of her car. Today, this organization serves over 1,500 meals each week at two locations, one south of Richmond and one downtown. In addition, food baskets and donated clothes, blankets and other necessities are distributed to those in need.  Groups from Reveille are involved with lunches twice a month. On the fourth Thursday, Reveille volunteers prepare and serve a hot lunch to over 180 guests at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in downtown Richmond. On the fourth Monday of each month, over 180 bag lunches packed by Reveille volunteers are distributed. Also, during the Christmas vacation from school, Reveille's Older Elementary Children and their parents host a meal.

Rebuilding Together of Richmond

Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit with a network of more than 200 affiliates across the United States. Their mission is to preserve affordable housing by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners. Each year, the last Saturday of April is Rebuilding Richmond Day. A neighborhood in Richmond with a large number of elderly, poor, and/or disabled residents is chosen. The team leaders meet with the owners before the work Saturday and make a list of needed repairs and they get the materials. On Rebuilding Day, dozens of volunteers, from youth to senior citizens, descend upon their assigned houses and put in a day of hard work to get all the repairs done. For the past two years, Reveille has had so many volunteers that we have been assigned two houses. In addition to having the chance to help fellow Richmonders, this day also gives Reveille's youth and adults a chance to work side by side.

Year-End Giving

Are you planning to make donations to Reveille in late December that you plan to claim on your 2011 income tax return?  If the answer is yes, following is important information you need to know.

Donations must be delivered or mailed and postmarked on or by December 31, 2011 in order to claim a charitable contribution deduction for 2011. Checks that are placed in the church offering during the first worship service in 2012 will not qualify for a charitable contribution deduction in 2011, even if the check is predated to 2011 or was actually written in 2011. However, checks that are written, mailed, and postmarked in 2011 will be deductible in 2011 though they are not received by Reveille until 2012.  If you have questions, please call Glynis Holcomb at 359-6041, ext. 118.
