Teaching and Learning Ministries

This Sunday, September 11

The crazy final days of summer are behind us, and children, youth and young adults have headed back to school. This Sunday, the halls of Reveille will be filled with the energy as fall Sunday school begins.  This month, our elementary children will learn the ancient stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. The Children and Worship classes for first graders begin this Sunday as these children gain a deeper understanding of worship. Our adult classes will also be meeting during the 9:30 hour as they begin new units of study.

During the 11:00 a.m. worship service we will celebrate our Teaching and Learning Ministries with the dedication of teachers and leaders. A special highlight of the service will be seeing each third grader receive his or her own Bible.

As disciples we are continually growing in our faith. To learn more about our Teaching and Learning Ministries, e-mail Carol Uzzle, Minister for Teaching and Learning, or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Reveille United Methodist Women

The Reveille UMW has had a "summer break" and is now making plans for our fall and winter projects and meetings. Please check out the UMW bulletin board in the hallway by the Library for our calendar.

UMW Circles will meet in September.  We welcome women to come and participate with us as we help women and children both locally and around the globe. The individual circles meet monthly.  The UMW General Meetings are held in on the first Tuesday of October, December, March and May for the entire UMW membership. The focus of these quarterly meetings will be announced in the Window.  In addition to the program at the General Meeting there are reports from the circle leaders and the Executive committee.  Morning ends with a delicious lunch.  UMW projects include the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter and the Chesterfield Women's Detention and Diversion Center.

The annual UMW Bake Sale is the weekend before Thanksgiving. Home made pies, cakes, cookies and candies will be in abundance for your Thanksgiving celebration.

Members of the UMW will bake and host Reveille's Christmas Open House on the afternoon of December 18.

If you are interested in learning more about the individual circles or have any questions about the UMW, please e-mail Donna Faye Kessel or Carol Uzzle, Minister for Teaching and Learning, or call Carol at 359-6041, ext. 117. Additional information can also be found here.

Living the Good Life Together

Living the Good Life Together: A Study of Christian Character in Community is a unique series of 6-to-12-week video and book studies. Participants will explore key features of Christian character and then, as a group, apply what they have learned in daily life.

Hospitality: Risking Welcome will begin our fall studies. What does it mean to give and receive welcome? What can we learn from it? Why is it risky? In this study, David O. Jenkins helps us to understand why hospitality is basic to our lives as Christians. Topics include Receiving Welcome, Risking Welcome, Risking Worship, and Risking Justice.

During the first six weeks, known as Come and See, the group will use Scripture, videos, study, and reflection to experience, discuss, and meditate on the Christian model of hospitality. During the last six weeks, known as Go and Do, the group will create and implement an action plan for applying and embodying hospitality in their lives.

This study begins September 18, 2011 and meets Sunday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Another Living the Good Life Together study on a different topic will begin January 8, 2012.

Spotlight on Children's Music Ministry

Susan Farmer will come out of retirement to direct Elementary Choir this fall; however, we will need someone to direct Elementary Choir for the January through April 2012 term.

Susan received her bachelor's degree from Georgia Tech and master's degree from the University of Louisville. She has taught math and physics at Saint Gertrude High School for 20+ years. Susan began serving in our children's music ministry by directing Cherub Choir about 20 years ago, directed Primary Choir for 10 years and was assistant, then director for Elementary Choir for seven years. Susan says, "I love children. I love music. I love to teach. The children's music ministry is the perfect match for my gifts and talents. I am inspired by the children's boundless energy and their enthusiasm for sharing the love of God through singing."

Who will share God's love through music with our children? Are you the one God is calling to direct this choir starting in January? If so, please contact Cathy Armistead.

Martha Hodges began her tenure in children's music ministry by assisting with Elementary Choir in 1994. A bell choir was formed for the Elementary Choir, which Martha began directing in 2000. Following that, Martha started a bell group for the Primary Choir age group and has been directing these groups ever since. In addition, she began a bell choir for our youth last fall.

Martha has a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and a master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She taught Special Education for almost 32 years - in Walterboro, SC, King George, VA, and most recently at Tuckahoe Middle School in Henrico County. She has also coached tennis and is Assistant Director of the Kanawha Recreation Association. Martha states, "music is an important part of worship and I enjoy sharing this with the children. It gives them another way to take an active role in worship and at the same time learn music."

Benefit concerts will help fund chapel piano

We will be moving into our new chapel before long, and we will need a piano for this new worship space. Several pianists from Reveille will be in concert to raise money for this project, and we hope you can help us.

The concerts will be on Saturday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. The program will include pieces performed by Betty Ann Spiers, Matt Nagi, Elizabeth Bell, John Bullock, Kevin Bruny, Davis and Dalton Jobe, Cathy Armistead and more.  In addition to piano pieces, you will hear a trio, including piano, organ and harpsichord.

Please plan to attend one or both of these concerts. Our goal is to raise $18,000 - $20,000 for a six-foot baby grand piano, so any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated.  For more information, please contact Cathy Armistead at 359-6041, ext. 123, or by e-mail here.
