Youth mission team heads to

the Big Apple

On Saturday, July 9, our team of 60 youth and 12 adults will board an Amtrak train bound for New York City. In the course of its trip the team will share worship with two churches as the choir performs Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

These youth and adults will organize food in the largest food distribution center in the United States - a warehouse that resources food pantries and soup kitchens across New York. They will deliver meals through Meals on Wheels and prepare and serve meals in soup kitchens. These opportunities to serve will provide our youth and adults a vision of poverty and homelessness that Richmond cannot offer. It will allow them to see the grace of God at work in others' lives and to receive the grace that can come only through those who are truly grateful even for the little bit they have.

Please pray for the team as they prepare and during their trip, July 9-16. The team members are Jack Anderson, Ross Anderson, Cathy Armistead, Kelly Baxter, Caroline Bell, Elizabeth Bell, Mark Bell, Rachel Bishop, Molly Black, David Bogaev, Emily Bogaev, Michael Brown, John Bullock, Susan Bullock, Chris Cantone, Katie Cantone, Tom Cantone, Gracie Carter, Anna Lyle Collett, Kirby Collett, Brian Craven, Jamie Craven, Caroline Creasey, Harvey Creasey, Oliver Creasey, Sarah Denny, Mary Evans, Emma Farmer, Laura Follansbee, Jackson Fuller, Lizzie Graumlich, Lee Gray, Julia Greer, Elise Grinkemeyer, Susan Grinkemeyer, Kyreke Jackson, Alexa Johnson, C.J. Please choose a few each day to lift up by name as you pray so that they may feel God's power and presence as they serve on Christ's behalf.

July Book Review: Heaven is for Real

On Wednesday, July 20, please join our own Stephen Coleman for a review of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Heaven is for Real.

Heaven Is for Real is the true story of a small-town Nebraska Heaven is for Realpastor's four-year-old son, who during emergency surgery, slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about looking down to see the doctor operating on him, as well as seeing his dad praying in the waiting room. The family doesn't know what to believe, but as the details of Colton's experience unfold, the evidence became clear.

Colton describes meeting people in heaven sharing impossible-to-know details about each person. He describes meeting the sister his mother had miscarried before he was born and of whom he had no knowledge and meeting his great grandfather, who died 30 years before Colton was born. He talks about the horse that "only Jesus can ride," about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us.

Told by his father, but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is that heaven is a real place, that Jesus really loves children, and that we must be ready because there is a coming last battle. This story has taken many by storm and has impressed many a skeptic.

For more information about this and our other summer book reviews, please click here.

Join us for refreshments at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall with the book review starting at 11:00 a.m. Child care will be available.

Will you help feed the homeless?

This month we will prepare bag lunches for the homeless on Sunday, July 24 in the fellowship hall at 10:30 a.m. On Thursday of that week, July 28, our day campers will be serve the hot meal at both of the Friends of the Homeless feeding sites.Friends of the Homeless

We first became aware of Richmond Friends of the Homeless when our day camp prepared and served a hot meal several years at the original feeding site. Each year we ask Shawnee Hansen, the founder, to meet with the children. We are proud of our children and their parents who have helped us as a congregation make Matthew 25:35 a reality.

Come join the children on Sunday, July 24 in helping to prepare the bag lunches. Please contact Jennifer Huneycutt if you would like to contribute food for the bag lunches this month.

A note of thanks

The Honduras Mission Team would like to thank all those who generously contributed toothbrushes for the team to take with us July 16 when we journey to Honduras to provide medical and dental care to the people there. We hope to give a toothbrush to everyone we care for and especially the children. Whether you donated toothbrushes, supported us through Glorious Gifts, or will pray for our safe travel and effective work, we could not make this transformational mission happen without the support of the congregation and we thank you.

Ways you can support VBS and Day Camp

Before we know it the halls of Reveille will be busy as children participate in Vacation Bible School (VBS) and Day Camp the week of July 24. Listed below are the ways that VBS 2011 logoyou can support this important summertime ministry:

The craft center needs paper towel rolls and food magazines.

The Bible storyteller needs a chimenea (a small, rustic outdoor fireplace), clay dishes, jugs and other items that might be found in a Biblical kitchen.

Actors are needed to be an Israelite woman, Jesus, Peter, townspeople, and disciples. The role of disciple is an easy role, as you will simply be acting out the Passover meal silently.

Day camp needs empty food boxes (such as cereal, crackers, granola bars, etc.) for a recycling project. Broken down boxes are fine.

Please leave the VBS and Day Camp craft items in the bright blue plastic totes near the elevator near the choir room or the fellowship hall.

E-mail Lili Boyd or call her at 763-5655 if you can help with the items needed for the storyteller or are interested in being an actor.
