Fifth Sunday challenge begins
41He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." (Mark 12:41-44) This passage has both haunted me and encouraged me. I am haunted because I have always felt like I haven't been able to contribute enough monetarily to this WONDERFUL church. I am encouraged because I am reminded that such a small offering by this widow must still have great purpose in God's eyes. As I have given over these last 22 years, it always felt like it was so little. How can so little make a difference? Consequently, whenever there is a discussion about tithing and gifts to God, I shrink before this undertaking. But one day, as a member of the stewardship committee, I listened to a discussion about church giving. I had a "ah-ha" moment. I started calculating that there are four fifth Sundays in a year. What if, on those extra fifth Sundays, everyone plans to bring an extra gift of $5, or $10, or whatever EXTRA you may have; no gift is too small. For May 29, I have placed my extra gift in the plate and I am marking the calendar for the next fifth Sunday, July 31. Let's find out the abundance that an extra gift on a special Sunday can bring to further God's kingdom. - Kathy Driver |

Conference offering will help many
The Virginia Conference will have its annual meeting June 15-19 in Roanoke. Our four appointed clergy - Jim Noland, Abby Kocher, Stephen Coleman, and Carol Uzzle - will attend, along with our elected lay members of the annual conference - Kevin Bruny, Carrington Castle, Ruby Corr, and Dick Davis. They will take with them a check from Reveille which reflects your generous offering to be combined with those from other churches in the conference. The goal is for this offering to raise $200,000 to be shared by ministries in Brazil and Mozambique, and in Roanoke, as well as in Horntown, Virginia on the Eastern Shore.
Please make your contribution by writing Annual Conference Offering on your check and making it payable to Reveille UMC.

A note of appreciation
May 2011
To My Reveille Family: This is a much overdue thank you note for all the prayers, cards, and gifts you have sent to me. I am progressing nicely, but the only place I go is to the dentist and doctors. For the time being I am going to church by TV. Again, thank you so much. - Mildred Kennedy
