Thirteen youths will make profession of faith

Reveille takes confirmation very seriously. Few churches require nine months of preparation, including two classes each month, two off-site retreats, a service project, and monthly meetings Confirmationwith parents and mentors. Reveille takes confirmation seriously because we take church membership seriously. We want our youth to understand that in joining the church, they are committing to live their lives with Christ as their priority, and to live out that commitment in a faith community, in our faith community.

This Sunday, 13 eighth graders will make that commitment at the 11:00 a.m. service. These teens feel prepared for the responsibility of church membership. They are ready to pledge, to serve, and to make their participation at Reveille a priority. They are ready to fulfill the obligations every Reveille member has. We should be proud because this congregation has nurtured these youth - many since birth - has led them to this moment, and will continue to be part of their faith journey for years to come.

Please pray for the members of this class as we prepare to fulfill our responsibility to continue to support and encourage them as they continue to grow in their relationship with God. The members of the class are Eric Asplund, Jack Bassett, Trey Berry, Charlie Caravati, Carter Clements, Katherine Custer, Lizzie Graumlich, Victoria Kunberger, Bentley Logue, Clay Rogers, Hannah Thompson, Luke Thompson and Zarina Thompson.

Also, please offer your gratitude to the mentors who have journeyed alongside them all year: Abby Baker, Tim Black, Susan Creasey, Jud Elliott, Mary Evans, Rick Farmer, Sharon Humphreys, Andy Poarch, Rich Schweiker, Brant Smith, Didi Templeman, Sally Thompson, and Clark Williams. We thank them for their role in these teens' lives for the past year and into the future.

 Mission Benefit Concert will help

United Methodist Family Services

Don't miss our annual Mission Benefit Concert, this Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Reveille Ringers and Reveille Ensemble will begin the concert with handbell favorites, followed by Robert Phanord, II singing a Handel aria.

 Mission Benefit Concert

You will then move to twentieth-century France, as the Chancel Choir is joined by guest singers to present Maurice Durufle's Requiem. This masterwork, based on Gregorian Chant, will be conducted by Dr. Charles Staples, Director of Music at Trinity United Methodist Church, and accompanied by chamber orchestra and harp from the Richmond Symphony, and Cathleen Armistead at the organ.

The program will conclude with the Reveille Ringers playing a familiar piece with its roots in Africa.

At the conclusion of the concert, please join us for a reception in the fellowship hall, catered by our own Tommy Threewitts.

Each year, talented musicians and vocalists present the Mission Benefit Concert as a fundraiser for a worthy cause. Our beneficiary this year is United Methodist Family Services (UMFS), which provides a network of services to at-risk children and families. If you have not had an opportunity to donate, you may do so at the concert. For more information about United Methodist Family Services, please click here

Boxed and Ready To Go!

A Construction Update

By Claire Kaugars

Moving the Bell TowerIf you haven't checked out the construction site at Reveille lately, the bell tower was boxed up for support, raised on a moving platform, and moved to another site on the property. This was as exciting as the trek of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, only faster. Check out this picture of the bell tower on the moving platform, especially with its impressive foundation. This makes us all so grateful to Bill Coor, Reveille member, whose superb construction of the bell tower was showcased by this move. The platform was operated by remote control. Now that's a big toy! [More pictures of this move may be viewed here.]

Other updates include the fact that we have all of our site permits. Storm water and sanitary sewer lines will be relocated, and the storm water detention system will be constructed in the next few weeks as well.

The windows in the old chapel, parlor, and corridor to the sanctuary have been blocked in to form a fire wall between the new building and the existing building. Dry wall will be installed in the window cavities to give us a recessed window outline area. These areas can be used for display purposes.

A Fifth Sunday Challenge

By Kathy Driver

41He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." (Mark 12:41-44)

This passage has both haunted me and encouraged me. I am haunted because I worry if I am able to give enough to the church that I love so much. I am encouraged because I am reminded that such a small monetary giving by this widow must still have great purpose in God's eyes.

As a member of the stewardship committee, I started calculating what small donations might produce. It wasn't long before I came to realize that for a Sunday offering, when attendance is about 500, if everyone was able to give just $5 that day, we would have $2,500 in the offering plate. If we only focused on doing this on the four fifth Sundays in a calendar year we would have collected $10,000! What a difference that would make over and above our pledges to our annual operating budget and outreach.

So, here is the challenge: on Sunday, May 29, (one of four fifth Sundays this year) bring your extra gift of $5, or $10, or even $1; no gift is too small. Let's find out the abundance that an extra gift on a special Sunday can bring to further God's kingdom.

 Ladies: Cleaning out your closet

can help women leaving prison

UMW prison ministry clothes closet is back

The Reveille United Methodist Women (UMW) has brought back the prison ministry clothes closet which benefits the Chesterfield Women's Detention and Diversion Center. Clothing MinistryWe are collecting gently-used shoes, handbags, dresses, skirts, blouses, tops, suits, and pants. All sizes are needed.

In cleaning out your closet, you can help other women look and feel great when they go to job interviews after release. Many of the women have no family or their families have limited means. They really appreciate these "new" outfits. Your support is much appreciated as we help these women transition to a new life.

We will collect clothes year round in the closet across from the elevator by the main church hallway. You may place your clothing donations in the green plastic boxes in the closet.

If you questions, please e-mail Donna Fay Kessel, UMW President, or call her at 399-2539.

Annual Conference Offering will help many

near and far away

The Virginia Annual Conference hopes to raise $200,000 from churches throughout the Conference to be presented at its annual meeting June 15-19 in Roanoke. This offering will be shared by four recipients, receiving $50,000 each.

The Annual Conference offering reflects mission needs in some of the poorest annual conferences in the Methodist Church in Brazil. We continue to support what our sister bishop, Bishop Nhanala, and her leaders have decided are priorities for our partnership with Mozambique. Here in Virginia, we will be lifting up two district-centered ministries, the Agape Christian Children's Community Center, Inc., on the Eastern Shore district, and Grace Ministries Shalom Zone in the Roanoke District. The recipients are as follows:

Leadership Development/Living Water in Mozambique supports lay and clergy in leadership development and also supports the Living Well Society in its ministry of drilling new wells.

The Shade & Fresh Water Project was developed by the Brazil United Methodist Church to keep children off the streets and away from gangs and drugs by providing afterschool center, resources, and materials.

Agape Christian Children's Community Center Inc. on the Eastern Shore of Virginia supports the small rural ethnic minority community of Horntown to provide a healthy nurturing environment for at-risk children.

Shalom Zone: Grace Ministries in the Roanoke District ministers to the disenfranchised of downtown Roanoke with an emphasis on the recovering community, the immigrant community and marginalized people.

Please give generously and make your contribution by designating your check or marking your envelope Annual Conference Offering.

For those who receive pledge envelopes in the mail, you will find specially-marked envelopes in those packets, also. If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to Reveille UMC and note in the memo section, Samaritan Fund. VUMH thanks you for your faithful support.
