TopGroundbreaking News!

GroundbreakingAt long last, we are about to begin constructing our exciting new addition. Plan to be present at 12:00 noon this Sunday, March 20 for our symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. This dedication will be the conclusion of our 11:00 worship, and weather permitting, will take place outdoors on the site of our new chapel. We are pleased that Bishop Charlene Kammerer will be present with us for this event.

Special offering for victims of

Pacific disaster

To make a donation through the United Methodist Church to help with disaster relief for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, please make your check payable to Reveille UMC and note in the memo section "Pacific Emergency." One hundred percent of your donation will go to relief efforts; none will be used for administrative costs.

Please note that we do have special offering envelopes for this purpose in the pew racks in the chapel and sanctuary and also in the fellowship hall, as well as in the church office.

Lent/Easter outreach offering collection begins

Our 2011 Lenten outreach offering will be shared between two worthy causes. It will provide much-needed funding for Richmond Friends of the Homeless, the feeding program Reveille supports, and also for the One Great Hour of Sharing offering.

Each month, Reveille members participate in the preparation of cheesy potato casseroles and also serve a hot meal to those less fortunate who gather at the Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church feeding site. This worthy program nearly ended late last year due to a lack of funding.

The One Great Hour of Sharing offering provides for the administrative costs of United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) so that 100% of the donations you give to special offerings for disaster relief (such as for the recent disaster in the Pacific) will be used just for relief efforts and not for administrative costs.

Donations to this offering may be in any amount. If you would like to have your donation acknowledged in the Easter printout of these gifts, be sure to complete a yellow order form or print one here and return it with your check or cash no later than Wednesday, April 13.

Lenten services continue this Wednesday

We continue our series of Lenten services at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel this Wednesday with the Reverend Dr. Lee Sheaffer as our preacher.

After attending Shenandoah College, Dr. Sheaffer earned a bachelor of arts degree from Bridgewater College, a master of divinity degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio and the doctor of divinity degree from Shenandoah University.

Dr. Sheaffer was ordained in the Evangelical United Brethren Church, which united with the Methodist Church in 1968 to form the United Methodist Church. He served as pastor in the Shenandoah Valley, Arlington, Roanoke, and Alexandria, and served as District Superintendent of the Winchester, Norfolk, and Ashland Districts.  He also served as Council Director of the Virginia Conference.  Retired from appointed ministry in 2001, Dr. Sheaffer currently serves as the Executive Director of the Association of Educational Institutions in a part-time position.

Dr. Sheaffer and his wife Sue have been married since 1955 and raised three children. They have five grandchildren.

UMW Prison Ministry Career Closet is open

The prison ministry team of Reveille's United Methodist Women has reinstituted the collection of gently-used clothes for women at the Chesterfield Women's Detention and Diversion Center.

We are accepting gently-used clothes, shoes, pocketbooks, belts, coats and jackets for our Career Closet at the Chesterfield Center. All sizes are needed. You may bring the clothes to the church and place them in the green plastic boxes located in the first floor closet across from the elevator near the stairs. The closet is marked "Prison Ministry."  The clothes will be taken to the center each week.

Ladies: Start your spring cleaning in your closets and donate these treasures to women in need of clothes for job interviews, for the graduation ceremony from this program, and for everyday living. They are so grateful for all we can help them accomplish.

- Donna Fay Kessel, President Reveille UMW, Prison Ministry Team leader

Come together for Rebuilding Together

Can you paint, swing a hammer, plant flowers, or provide food? Then Rebuilding Together of Richmond needs you on April 30.

For 17 years, Reveille has participated in the ministry of Rebuilding Together. This organization works to assure that homeowners in need, particularly those who are elderly, low-income or disabled, live in warm, safe and dry homes. In 2010, Rebuilding Together completed 42 houses, used 1200 volunteers who committed to over 11,000 hours of volunteer time, and leveraged $160,000 in donations of materials and labor. All of this was accomplished on just one day in April! Now, that's impact!

Last year, Reveille volunteers of all ages completely rebuilt a kitchen, a bathroom, and a shed, installed appliances, and scraped and painted an entire house. We also installed new dead bolts, doors, windows, gutters, soffits, and rain barrels and painted everything.

This year, as part of National Rebuilding Day, April 30, Rebuilding Together of Richmond has chosen the Peter Paul neighborhood. As part of this effort, Reveille has committed to work on two homes.

Register online now or look for sign-up sheets in the main hallway, across from the choir room. Your support of this important ministry allows Reveille to continue to meet the growing need for help of our elderly, low-income or disabled neighbors.

Summer camping for children and youth

at Westview on the James

We now have brochures which describe the summer camping program for children and youth at Westview on the James. Look for them where in various locations around the church, including across from the welcome center, in the narthex, and in the fellowship hall.

Yearly, many of our elementary children and youth attend this United Methodist camp  located in Goochland County. Three different residential camping experiences are offered. Adventure camps are designed for 13-17 year olds who want a different kind of experience.  To learn more about the summer camping program, pick up a brochure at church or visit www.westviewonthejames.org. An open house will be held at Westview on May 1 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
