TopFat Tuesday pancake supper

returns for seventh year

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. Pancake suppers harken back to the middle ages as a way to use up sugar, eggs and other items not to be used during Lent as many Christians denied themselves sweets and other pleasurable foods for these 40 days.

PancakesOn March 8, the Men's Prayer Breakfast group will be flipping pancakes at their seventh annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper. The men will serve from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. (please note time change from previous years). There is no charge for this supper, but love offerings gladly will be accepted to benefit the One Great Hour of Sharing offering that supports the work of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief).

Worship for Alpha will begin at 6:30 followed by the evening's talk entitled "How Can We Have Faith?" Those coming for the supper are welcome to stay for Alpha.

Lent begins with

Ash Wednesday service

March 9, 7:00 p.m.

Lent is a period of 40 days, not including Sundays, when we are encouraged to engage in reflection and penitence in preparation for Easter. It is a time to reflect upon our mortality and on our need for the saving grace that comes to us in Christ Jesus. This year, our Ash Wednesday service will be led by the Reverend Abigail Kocher. Plan to start Lent with this solemn service in the sanctuary next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Altar decorations during Lent explained

During Lent, our altars will be covered with purple paraments or altar cloths. Purple is traditionally the color of royalty, and having a purple cloth on the altar helps people remember that Jesus is king. There are will be no flowers or any other decorations displayed in the sanctuary or chapel, thus saving flowers and new life for Easter Sunday and the resurrection. Sanctuary altar arrangements will consist of greens, pods, and berries arranged in a lovely fashion. Traditional displays of palms and lilies will be in the sanctuary on Palm Sunday and Easter.

Senior pastor embarks on mission trip to Sierra Leone

On Saturday, March 5, I will be traveling to Sierra Leone to learn more about the Children's Rescue Center (CRC) located in Bo. Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon started this ministry several years ago, and because this work is so important, the CRC has grown by adding a number of partner churches. Our own Mark Dozier joined a work team last summer.

Sierra Leone is a very poor West African country located on the coast near the equator. In recent years Sierra Leone has been ravaged by a number of brutal civil wars leaving the country with an overwhelming number of orphans. The CRC seeks to address this compelling need. My goal is to gain a first-hand understanding of the situation and to help Reveille become more involved.

Since many African countries are now embroiled in civil unrest, several people have expressed concern for my safety. Fortunately, Sierra Leone is well south of the area of current concern, although it is still considered unstable. I am confident that this will be an enlightening experience, but I would appreciate your prayers while I am away. When I return, I plan to share what I have learned, so stay tuned.

- Jim Noland

Calling all charter members of Reveille

We would love to hear from former members of Union Station Methodist Church or Monument Methodist Church (or their family members). It is hoped that there is still memorabilia from these two churches in attics or basements that we may put in our history vault to be preserved as part of Reveille's history. If you have items to donate, please call Cheryl Arrington in the church office, 359-6041, extension 114, or e-mail her at carrington@reveilleumc.org.

Caring for God's creation

There is a large green bin with the recycle symbol on it in the fellowship hall. Please use it for all your recyclables - paper, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic containers (number Recyclingprinted on container) and aluminum cans. Be sure to empty and rinse containers and cans.

Remember: All creation is the Lord's, and we have a responsibility to be good stewards of that creation. What can you do this week to care for God's creation?  If you have ideas or suggestions, please contact Susan Creasey at creaseys@verizon.net.
