Alpha

TopWhat is Alpha about spiritually?

While it teaches about God's love, the Alpha course helps participants experience that love as well. Every part of the Alpha course is designed to say: Your thoughts matter. Your questions are relevant. Your life is valuable.  Spiritually, Alpha has been described as:

An open door - Alpha is an open door to people outside your church...those who are not believers or church-goers. It's informal and relaxed so people can drop their defenses and ask their questions.

A place to begin - The Alpha course began as a means of presenting the basic principles of Christianity to new Christians. Today, Alpha is still a place for new believers to get rooted in the faith.

A bridge - Alpha can be a path for deeper involvement in the church. It is a short, no-pressure commitment. And while guests explore our church, we have the opportunity to serve and embrace people who sometimes slip through the cracks.

A springboard - Alpha changes lives, including the lives of believers. Reveille members are invited to attend.  By the end of the course, people find their faith refreshed and are energized to share the experience with others. Many take the opportunity to serve as leaders in the next Alpha course.

Alpha will be held on Tuesday evenings starting February 22 at 6:00 p.m. and continue for 10 weeks. In Alpha, we share an informal meal, sing a few songs, listen to a talk on how Christianity approaches the question at hand, and then gather into small groups for discussion on the weekly talk.  For more information about Alpha, click here, or to register, click here.  If you have questions, e-mail Burdette Robinson or call him at 837-7717, or e-mail Carol Uzzle or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Joys and Concerns

SYMPATHY

The Reveille family extends Christian love and sympathy to Stacia Flinn and family on the recent death of her grandmother.

Talking with teens about sexuality

If you are the parent or caregiver of a teen, this is for you.  If you have a preschool aged child, this is for you.  If you are a grandparent, if you are involved in the life of Kate Ottchildren and teens, this is for you, too.

On Saturday, February 26, we will provide an opportunity for adults to engage with an expert on how to teach decision-making to children and youth, skills which she helps adults apply to teaching about sex and sexuality.

Dr. Ott received her Ph.D. in Christian Social Ethics from Union Theological Seminary (New York), and has spent many years working in local churches as a youth minister and Christian educator.

We will meet in the fellowship hall at 9:00 a.m. on February 26, break for lunch, and complete our day by 3:00 p.m. Please feel free to invite friends to participate. To register or for more information, please e-mail Dwayne by this Sunday, February 20. The only cost is $20 for lunch, payable that morning. We hope you will join us.

Mothers' small group is forming

Are you a mother of small children? Do you want to fellowship with other mothers who are raising small children? Please join us for a Mothers' Small Group starting Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Reveille House parlor. This small group will meet two times each month: once on the first Thursday of the month at Reveille with child care, and one other time during the month at a time and place to be determined by the group (no child care). We will discuss "mommy issues," grow together in prayer, and participate together in family-friendly, fun activities in the community. If you are interested, please contact Stormy Noland at 836-6495.

Youth Group News 65%Youth group will meet on our combined schedule this Sunday, February 20.  That schedule is:

     4:30 p.m. combined choir

     5:30 p.m. dinner ($3)

     6:00 p.m. combined youth group.

Our topic is a surprise - come find out what we will be doing.

On February 27, the youth group will be having our annual "sex talk." Parents, please talk with your teens and use your judgment about their attendance that night. This is a no-holds-barred conversation about Christianity and sexuality.

This Sunday, February 20, is the deadline to register for the Big Apple '11, our mission trip and choir tour to New York City.  This event is a combined trip between the choir and the youth group.  Those who are not in choir will participate in the mission work we will do with the homeless and will attend a few of the choir's performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as members of the audience or background support (if they choose).  The choir will be participating in the mission work and performances.  The dates are July 9-17, though we may shorten the trip a bit, depending on our travel schedule.  The cost per person is $150.  To register, send a check made out to "Reveille UMC" to Dwayne or Cathy by February 20.

Wonderful Wednesday

February 23

Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt has written a book entitled Finding Thalhimers.  The book has been described as a "narrative that weaves together history, biography, and memoir into a portrait of an American retail family." Elizabeth represents the sixth generation of the Thalhimer family to live in Richmond, and she is the granddaughter of Reveille Wonderful Wednesday 30%members Edie and Jack Brush. At 6:45 p.m. in the fellowship hall, Elizabeth will review her book and enlighten us with a story about Richmond history and her family.

At 6:00 p.m., before the program, you are invited to join us for our fellowship meal.  The menu will be hamburger steak with mushroom gravy, orzo, squash casserole, yeast rolls, fruit and dessert. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for anyone under 4. Please make a reservation for the dinner by marking the Wonderful Wednesday box on the friendship pad this Sunday or by calling the church office by Monday, February 21 at 3:00 p.m.

Help feed the homeless

Hot meal - February 24

Richmond's homeless population needs us Thursday, February 24, when we serve a hot meal of roasted chicken, cheesy potato casserole, and green beans. You can help by providing one of the casseroles. The recipe, with drop-off instructions, can be picked up from the sign-up board near the welcome center or in the fellowship hall.

You can also help by being one of the servers at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for an hour or two of your time.  You can meet us at Reveille at 10:45 and carpool or meet us at the site. If needed, child care is available while serving the meal; please e-mail Friends of the Homeless 60%Carol Uzzle or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117 to request it.

In case of inclement weather, Friends of the Homeless follows the Richmond City schools closing policy: If the schools are closed, we do not serve. If there is only a delay, we go at our usual time.  In case of a last minute closing, the potato casseroles will be frozen and used at a later date.

Other groups usually donate desserts and rolls for the meals, but at our January meal, there were none.  If you would like to donate a box of cookies or a package of rolls ahead of time, please know they would be appreciated. Just label them "Friends of the Homeless" or "FOH" and leave them in the box provided in the church kitchen.

For more information, e-mail Joanna Tilley or call her at 556-5935.  Thank you.

Bag Lunches - February 27

On Sunday, February 27, we will prepare bag lunches to be served on Monday at the Mt. Moriah feeding site for Richmond Friends of the Homeless.  Our older elementary children and their families sponsor this ministry.

We hope that you will come to the fellowship hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 27th to lend a hand in making some of the 160 sandwiches or packing the lunch bags.  If you have questions or would like to contribute some of the food needed for the lunches, please e-mail Jennifer Huneycutt

Ministry Sunday revisited

On Ministry Sunday, January 23, we welcomed to our pulpit the Reverend Dr. Rhonda Van Dyke Colby, who delivered a message of invitation to us - God's invitation. The entire service focused on our call to respond to God's invitation to be in ministry. We are called to be like Esther, recognizing that God needs us at this moment to do some special work in God's plan, or to be like Mordecai, seeing in others the gifts they have for "such a time as this."

Reveille's congregation responded. Among our three worship services, 34 individuals had an "Esther moment," feeling called to some special role in response to God's invitation.  Another 38 individuals took the role of Mordecai, naming 51 Reveille members in whom they see gifts and calling. The staff is following up with all of these persons, either by letter or in person, offering support and encouragement as they seek to fulfill God's call.

In lieu of a stipend for Reverend Van Dyke Colby, Reveille has made a donation of $1,200 to Shenandoah University in her honor. This money will provide financial support for nursing students who will travel down the Amazon River on a medical mission trip over their spring break. Once again, Reveille responds to God's call with a "yes" and enables ministry to happen beyond our walls.  Please continue to listen for God's inviting voice, for the Esther and Mordecai moments that will come your way.

Souper Bowl of Caring yields big results

Reveille lived up to its name of being a caring congregation on SuperBowl Sunday, February 6!  Following each of the worship services older elementary children greeted worshippers with soup kettles for a SouperBowl of Caring offering.  We are happy to report that $1008.85 was received. This offering will go to support the ministries of Richmond Friends of the Homeless.  Thank you for your support and for showing our children one of the many ways we as a congregation care for those beyond our walls.

 UMW general meeting

The general meeting of the United Methodist Women will be held Tuesday, March 1, at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Our speaker will be Jennifer Ernst, who with her husband, Darryl, and Maker Mariel, a Sudanese "lost boy," founded Hope for Humanity and Hope and Resurrection Secondary School in Southern Sudan. Lunch will be served after the meeting. The cost of lunch is $8, and reservations may be made through circle leaders.

A note of appreciation

We felt the loving arms of Reveille Church around us during my recent fall and hospitalization.  The many prayers, phone calls, and cards were much appreciated.

Our love,
