Alpha

Over the past few weeks you have been hearing about Alpha, which will begin Tuesday evening, February 22.  If you are considering registering but are still wondering what Alpha is all about, please read what previous participants are saying:

Mark:  "When I first heard about the Alpha course I was at a stage when I was searching for something 'out there.'  I really needed to ask questions and not feel like I was getting a hard-sell pitched at me. Now I perceive things differently and just feel so at peace. I have also met a wonderful bunch of new friends in the course."

Graham:  "The first evening surprised me completely. The people were from all walks of life, from different races, classes and abilities. During the first evening, there were no prayers or heavy preaching. We were just given the opportunity to listen to the talk and then discuss anything we wanted. I chose to ask some challenging and confrontational questions, but they were welcomed, and I was made to feel valued and appreciated. I enjoyed the evening so much that I couldn't wait to go back the following week...."

Rebecca:  "Our church was offering this course and my husband and I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to share in this spiritual journey. We go to church with our two kids, say our prayers, etc.but something was missing. We wanted to find out what was missing."

Heather: "I was the typical 20-something who had attended church as a child, but once I became an adult I stopped going. When I returned to church I felt like something was missing in my life. The Alpha course helped me understand more about God."

Alpha will meet for 10 weeks.  Everyone in the community is welcome.  Participants will enjoy food, worship, a talk, and small groups. Child care will be provided.

Spiritual Life Retreat registration deadline is Monday

Found in The Faith We Sing, "Come and Find the Quiet Center" is the title of a hymn by Shirley Erena Murray.  We know that as Christians we are called to love God by loving Denise Bennettothers.  But how do we know when we've passed from committed to over-committed?  How do we find the quiet center where we can hear God's "still small voice" and discern when to say "yes" and when to say "no?"  Using story and music, prayer, scripture and discussion, Denise Bennett, chaplain at the Hermitage, will help participants identify and practice different ways of drawing closer to that quiet center where God is found.

The Spiritual Life Retreat will take place at Reveille on Saturday, February 19 from 8.30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, starting with coffee and breakfast snacks.  Child care will be provided. Register online today at www.reveilleumc.org; the deadline to register is this Monday, February 14.

Parents: Your children receive messages

from everywhere

But are they getting the messages you want them to get?

Children and teens are bombarded with messages about sexuality and relationships all the time.  They may come in explicit ways from parents or school. They may be implicit, from observing how the church addresses relationships (or fails to), or how parents Kate Ottinteract with each other.  On Saturday, February 26, we are privileged to host Dr. Kate Ott, who will lead a day-long seminar for parents and caregivers on how to teach your children and teens about sexuality.  Dr. Ott is deputy director of the Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice and Healing.

Dr. Ott received her Ph.D. in Christian Social Ethics from Union Theological Seminary (New York), and has spent many years working in local churches as a youth minister and Christian educator.

The seminar is open to all adults, with a special emphasis on parents of children and teens. We will meet in the fellowship hall at 9:00 a.m. on February 26, break for lunch, and complete our day by 3:00 p.m.  We ask only for a contribution of $20 per person (payable that day) to help offset  meal and snack costs.

Please register by e-mailing Dwayne Stinson by February 20. Feel free to spread the word to adult friends; all are welcome.

Help serve a hot meal to those in need

Thursday, February 24, is our day to work with Friends of the Homeless to serve a hot meal to homeless persons at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.  We ask for your help in Friends of the Homeless 60%providing potato casseroles and in serving the meal.  If needed, child care is available while serving the meal; please e-mail Carol Uzzle or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117 to request it.

Sign-up sheets, along with the casserole recipe, are located near the welcome center and in the fellowship hall.  If you have questions, please call Joanna Tilley, 556-5925, or e-mail her.

We follow the snow closing policy of the Richmond City schools for this meal.  If there is only a delay in the school opening time, we serve at our usual time.

Sanctuary altar decorations during Lent explained

Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter. It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on  Holy Saturday. If you look on a calendar and count the days, they come to more than 40. This is because the Sundays in Lent are not counted.

For Christians, Lent is a time to prepare for Easter and to think about their relationship with God. It represents the 40 days when Jesus was tempted in the desert. During this time he didn't eat or drink anything. Because of this, some Christians give up favorite foods or drinks for this time.

During Lent, the altar is covered with a purple cloth. Purple is traditionally the color of royalty and having a purple cloth on the altar helps people remember that Jesus is king. There are no flowers or any other decorations displayed in the church, thus saving flowers and "new life" for Easter Sunday and the resurrection. This year our Worship Committee has made the decision to observe this tradition.  Altar arrangements will consist of greens, pods, and berries arranged in a lovely fashion. Traditional displays of palms and lilies will be in the sanctuary on Palm Sunday and Easter.

Just as with other Sundays, those wishing to honor or memorialize someone by sponsoring a particular Sunday during Lent, may do so by calling Cheryl Arrington at 359-6041, ext. 114.  You will be reminded that no flowers will appear on these Sundays, and you will be asked if you would like to take the arrangement of greens with you after the 11:00 service.  If you want to take the arrangement, the designer will make it portable directly following the service. With our talented designers preparing these sanctuary altar decorations during the weeks of Lent, these arrangements will be no less beautiful than our usual weekly flowers.

Mondays in the garden

When spring arrives, a group of volunteers returns to Reveille's garden.  From early spring until November the Garden Committee works each Monday morning, weather Garden toolspermitting, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  They prune, weed, rake, water, mulch, plant, and perform any task necessary to maintain and save our historic garden.

Current members of this committee include Sally Boykin, Michele Clements, Margaret Ellmore, Bonnie Farmer, Betty Leap, Dan and Donna Ludwig, Jim Overacre, Ann Woods, and R. C. Hall.  Rhonda Geisel waters the terrace pots, as needed, especially in the summer. Having served for many years but now are retired are Bob Greer, Rock Mayo, Jim Neff, and John Stultz.

A dedicated group, the Garden Committee invites all who either have a green thumb or are willing to learn to join them on Monday mornings this spring so that Reveille's garden spaces will continue to receive the same loving care as in past decades.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact Bonnie Farmer at 288-0031.

Are you a mother of small children? Do you want to fellowship with other mothers who are raising small children? Please join us for a Mothers' Small Group, starting Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Reveille House parlor.

This small group will meet at Reveille two times each month, on the first Thursday of the month and one other time during the month to be determined by the group.
