TopSouper Bowl of Caring - February 6

Look for the black soup kettles after each

of the worship services this Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday for many is a time to gather with friends for a good game and lots of food.  This week we will be overwhelmed with information about the upcoming game on Sunday and what we might serve.  But for many in our community and around our country, Sunday will be like any other day, as adults worry if they will be able to provide food for their families.

Reveille's children are mission-minded.  Each summer since 2001 our day camp children have served a hot meal to those who come for the noon meal provided through Richmond Friends of the Homeless.  They introduced Reveille to this local ministry.  The children and their parents sponsor the preparation of bag lunches each month.  Reveille provides and serves a hot meal on the fourth Thursday of each month.  Our eyes have Souper Bowlbeen opened to the needs of the homeless and their thankfulness for a hot meal. The children are asked to see Christ in each person they serve.

Following each of the worship services this Sunday, some of our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will have black soup kettles, each with a sign reading Souper Bowl of Caring. We hope you will put a contribution in their kettles. All of the money we receive will go directly to Richmond Friends of the Homeless to help them with their expenses.

Wonderful Wednesday

Introduction to Alpha: "Christianity: Boring, Untrue, and Irrelevant?"

This Wednesday evening, February 9, you are invited to join us for the Wonderful Wednesday dinner and to learn more about Alpha.  Over the past month there have been articles in The Reveille Window and ministry moments about Alpha during the worship services.  The program will begin at 6:45 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m., we will have our fellowship meal with a menu of roast beef with brown gravy, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, rolls, dessert and fruit. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for anyone under 4.  Please make a reservation for the dinner by marking the Wonderful Wednesday box on the friendship pad on Sunday morning or by calling the church office by Monday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m.   Please see our website for upcoming Wednesday night menus and programs in February.

Alpha

Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life and the Christian faith.  The Alpha course at Reveille will meet on Tuesdays for 10 weeks starting February 22.  Participants will enjoy food, worship, a talk and small groups. Child care will be provided.  Anyone in the community is welcome.  To learn more, go to www.reveilleumc.org.  Plan now to attend the Alpha Introductory Dinner this coming Wednesday evening, February 9, at 6:00 p.m.  Questions?  E-mail Burdette Robinson or call him at 837-7717, or e-mail Carol Uzzle  or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117.  You may register here to participate.

The following questions will be discussed during the Alpha:

Who is Jesus?

Why did Jesus die?

How does God guide us?

How can I resist evil?

How can we have faith?

Why and how should we tell others?

Why and how do I pray?

Does God heal today?

Why and how should I read the Bible?

What about the Church?

During the Alpha "away" weekend participants will explore the following:

What does the Holy Spirit do?

How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?

How can I make the most of the rest of my life?

Big Apple or Bust.  Youth, if you are interested in attending the mission trip to New York City this summer, please register by February 20.  This is a combined trip for the youth group and the youth choir.  The choir will be performing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and the entire group will be working with the homeless all around New York. On Friday of that week we will have a free day to explore the city.  The dates are July 9-17, though we may shorten the trip a bit, depending on our travel schedule.  The cost per person is $150.  To register, send a check made out to "Reveille UMC" to Dwayne by February 20.

Parents: Get Educated

On Saturday, February 26, we are privileged to host Dr. Kate Ott, who will lead a day-long seminar on how to teach your children and teens about sexuality.  Dr. Ott is deputy director of the Religious Kate OttInstitute on Sexuality and Religion.  Her approach is to teach sexuality by teaching about decision making. She critiques the ways in which schools, churches and others have taught about sex as behaviors, rather than emphasizing sexual expression as a series of decisions.  She teaches about choices and consequences.  She helps us analyze the subtle but unspoken messages churches, families and our culture present about sexuality.  You can find an example of her work here. She is engaging, thoughtful and direct, and will bring a wealth of insight and knowledge to Reveille.

Dr. Ott received her Ph.D. in Christian Social Ethics from Union Theological Seminary (New York), and has spent many years working in local churches as a youth minister and Christian educator.

The seminar is open to anyone, with a special emphasis on parents of children and teens.  We will meet in the fellowship hall at 9:00 a.m. on February 26, break for lunch, and complete our day by 4:00 p.m.  We ask only for a contribution of $20/person (payable that day) to help offset meal and snack costs.

To sign up or for more information, please contact Dwayne Stinson ([email protected]) by February 20. Feel free to spread the word to friends - all are welcome.
