Alpha classes will soon begin at Reveille. If you have ever wondered if there is more to life or have wanted to have the opportunity to explore the meaning of life and the Christian faith, Alpha may just be the experience to enrich your life.
In a low key, friendly, non-threatening atmosphere you will have the opportunity to explore your questions and grow in the Christian faith. The evening will include dinner, worship, a presentation and discussion in small groups.
Mark your calendar and plan to join us on Wednesday, February 9, 6:00 p.m. for the Wonderful Wednesday dinner and program on Alpha with the first Alpha talk - "Christianity: Boring, Untrue, and Irrelevant?
Tuesday, February 22, 6:00 p.m. is the date for the first Alpha meeting in the fellowship hall. Alpha meets once a week for 10 weeks and includes a weekend or one-day getaway.
How Did Alpha Start?
The Alpha Course has been running for more than 30 years. It began at a central London church in the late 1970s as a means of presenting the basic principles of the Christian faith to new Christians. By 1990, Alpha was a central feature of the church's life and leaders saw the course could appeal to non-churchgoers. They adapted it, making it welcoming and suitable to those with no church background.
Since the 1990s, the Alpha course has spread internationally as more churches and groups have found it a helpful way to answer people's questions about the Christian faith. Now, Alpha is in 169 countries, including the U.S. where over two million people have taken the course.
To participate in Alpha, you may register here.
If you would like to volunteer or would like additional information, please e-mail Burdette Robinson or call him at 837-7717, or e-mail Carol Uzzle or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117. |

10 Things You May Not Know About CARITAS
As we prepare to host our CARITAS guests the weeks of February 5-18, here are some things to keep in mind as we open our hearts, our minds, and our schedules to receive them:
- CARITAS is the only shelter in Central Virginia that accepts families with fathers.
- Every willing guest of CARITAS is assigned a caseworker who individually works through the legal, mental, medical, or financial obstacles standing between that guest and self-sufficiency.
- CARITAS is the only shelter in Central Virginia that accepts families with adolescent males.
- CARITAS provides substance abuse counseling.
- All children are enrolled in school within 24 hours of entering CARITAS.
- Most guests of CARITAS are employed.
- All guests of CARITAS are required to save 75% of their income earned into an escrow account, which they will use to secure permanent housing.
- The CARITAS Furniture Bank is used by 22 charitable organizations to provide furnishings for refugees, victims of natural disasters or violence, veterans, and those finally able to secure permanent housing.
- CARITAS provides job training, tutoring, mentoring, computer classes, and support groups to any interested guest.
- In 2009, 186 congregations and 15,000 volunteers gave 96,000 hours of their time to provide 38,631 nights of shelter to 996 guests.
Volunteers are still needed in all areas. We need hosts for dinner, evening activities, and overnight times. Please e-mail Leigh Brabrand or call her at 354-9998 to sign up.

The red one or the yellow one? Methodist or Presbyterian? Baptist or Buddhist? Often it seems we simply follow in the path our parents laid down. This Sunday night, January 30, we will talk about choices. We will consider whether we are born into our faith, or if we can ever truly choose for ourselves what we believe.
Both choir and youth group are combined. Our schedule is:
4:30 p.m. Combined choir
5:30 p.m. Pizza for dinner ($3)
6:00 p.m. Combined youth group
Youth group will not meet next Sunday, February 6.
Big Apple or Bust! Youth, if you are interested in attending the mission trip to New York City this summer, please register by February 20. This is a combined trip for the youth group and the youth choir. The choir will be performing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and the entire group will be working with the homeless all around New York. On Friday of that week we will have a free day to explore the city. The dates are July 9-17, though we may shorten the trip a bit, depending on our travel schedule. The cost per person is $150. To register, send a check made out to "Reveille UMC" to Dwayne by February 20.
Parents of teens: Susan Grinkemeyer is attempting to organize a covenant group for mothers. The group would meet during the daytime on a weekday. Please let Dwayne know if you are interested in participating.

On Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday, February 6, our older elementary children will hold soup kettles at church doors. They will join young people in churches across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting.
All of the money the children receive in their soup kettles will be sent to Richmond Friends of the Homeless.
Across the nation in 2010, Souper Bowl participants collected $10 million for local charities. Since the Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990, more than $71 million has gone to help people in need.
Please support our older elementary children in this effort to show love for our neighbors by dropping your contribution in the soup kettle next Sunday.

Children's Sunday School Studies in February
Jesus' Teachings
If you were to name four of the teachings of Jesus, you probably would name those which the children will focus on in Sunday school this month. As parents, grandparents and friends of the children of the congregation, take time to share with the children you know how these scriptures have influenced your life. Next week parents will receive via email additional information related to the February lessons. This information also will be available in the education building and narthex.
February 6 - The Lord's Prayer, Luke 15:11-32
February 13 - The Birds of the Air, Matthew 6:25-33
February 20 - The Golden Rule, Matthew 7:12
February 27 - The Greatest Commandment, Matthew 22:34-40

Register Now for the Women's Spiritual Life Retreat
February 19
All women at Reveille, visitors and friends are invited to the 2011 Spiritual Life Retreat hosted by Reveille's United Methodist Women. This year's retreat will be led by Denise Bennett, who presented our 2008 retreat and is excited to return to Reveille.
Denise is a chaplain at The Hermitage in Richmond, a gifted harpist, and a professional storyteller. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary and has served as a spiritual director of Richmond Hill Retreat Center. Denise has told stories in many settings, churches, schools, retirement homes and professional conferences.
Our 2011 retreat will focus on commitment and over-commitment as it affects our physical and spiritual health. We will prayerfully ask how we can listen to the still small voice of God in our lives. We will discern what we are truly called to do and what we can let go.
The morning will begin with coffee and breakfast snacks from 8.30 to 9.00a.m. The retreat will start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude with lunch at midday. The cost is $25. Partial scholarships are available; to apply, e-mail Carol Uzzle or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117. Child care is available.
For further information or to register, click here. You may also register at church this Sunday, January 30. Look for the UMW table in the main hallway between 9.30 and 11:00 a.m. The deadline for registration is Friday, February 11.

Duruflé Requiem
Please join us!
To all singers: rehearsals of Maurice Duruflé's Requiem are on Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. in the choir room. Beginning March 1, they will also be on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. Requiem is our masterwork for the Mission Benefit Concert, which will be presented Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in our sanctuary.
Duruflé's Requiem is a beautiful twentieth-century French setting of the mass. The mass will be conducted by Dr. Charles Staples from Trinity United Methodist Church and accompanied by a chamber orchestra and Reveille's Cathy Armistead on organ. All who would like to sing in this concert are invited; we have plenty of copies of the musical score. For more details, please e-mail Cathy or call her at 359-6041, ext. 123.
