Ministry Sunday
You are Invited
"You are invited." We see these words on wedding announcements and party invitations. E-vites and Facebook events invite us to participate in a gathering, or even to support a cause. In truth, each of us has received an invitation to participate in God's work in the world.
On Ministry Sunday, January 23, Reveille will host The Reverend Dr. Rhonda VanDyke-Colby, Dean of Spiritual Life at Shenandoah University, and several of her students. Dr. VanDyke Colby will share a message of invitation at all three services, laying a challenge for how we must respond to God's call.
This week, our preview of Ministry Sunday continues with articles from Facilities Manager Bill Wright and Music Director and Organist Cathy Armistead, as they share how they have felt called to do God's work here at Reveille.
Bill Wright
I grew up in the Methodist Church. I attended Sunday school and rose through the scouting levels to become an Eagle Scout. My grandfather was a Methodist minister, and my mother was very active in a Methodist Women circle, as well as events for youth. For many years, my father worked for Cokesbury Bookstore, and I often went with him to various annual conferences to help him display and sell books and other Cokesbury items.
In college I majored in business and facility management. For twelve years, I worked in the resident life department and then as student union director of a West Virginia university. When my parents started having health issues, I decided to return to Richmond and find work here. I heard of the job opening for a facility manager at Reveille, and with what I learned from my university job and other jobs I previously held, along with being raised in the Methodist Church, I figured I might have something valuable to offer here. I have just completed 10 years at Reveille, and I have learned many things here.
Cathy Armistead
I began singing at age 2, playing the organ at age 10, and had my first church job at age 14. I have sung in choirs all my life and have been blessed with inspirational teachers, professors and choir directors (mentors) who have encouraged and guided me. When I was a sophomore in college, I began looking back on my life to see how I had gotten where I was and realized God had been guiding me all the way. I have always felt "pulled" to do what I am doing now, and I believe this is not unique to me - we are all created, endowed and guided by God to be ministers in God's kingdom! And not only ministers inside the church, but out in the world, in our every day lives, every minute of the day. God has created us uniquely to serve as only we can serve. What are you uniquely gifted to do for God today?

Acts of Faith
January 14 - March 19
The Acts of Faith Festival is a collaboration between Richmond's faith community and professional theatre companies and is America's largest faith inspired theatre event.
As the seventh year of Acts of Faith unfolds, a preview event will be held Friday, January 14, 7:00 p.m., at the Empire Theatre, 114 West Broad Street. Each theatre involved will present a brief scene or reading from their upcoming play. No tickets are required; this event is free and open to the public.
Immediately following each performance during the festival, the theatre will offer at least one open session to discuss the faith issues presented in the play. This session will include the play director, cast members, and faith leaders in the community.
For additional information, please visit The Acts of Faith or pick up a flyer at church.

Update on Church Building
As we begin the New Year, I want to bring you up to date on the progress of the new building. In early November, after much work with the architects, the Building Committee submitted the site Plan of Development (POD) to the city for comment and approval. The city responded in December and the Committee is developing a response to the concerns raised by the city. We expect that our response will be well received and that we will soon be able to proceed to the bidding process with the sub contractors. If all continues to go as planned, we should be able to break ground this spring.

Alpha is Coming to Reveille
Have you noticed banners reading "Alpha is coming" and wondered what that means?
Over the next several weeks be sure to check The Window for information about Alpha as we prepare for our first Alpha experience that will begin in late February.
What is Alpha?
Alpha is a study course that covers the basics of Christianity. It answers questions like "Who is Jesus?" and "Why did he die?" The Alpha course lasts 10 weeks, with a day or weekend getaway in the middle. Each week, guests gather to share an informal meal, sing a few songs, listen to a talk on how Christianity approaches the question at hand, and then gather into small groups for discussion. The talks act as a springboard for small group discussions. Plan to attend Wonderful Wednesday on February 9 when the program will focus on Alpha.
The student book costs $15. Child care will be available.
If you have questions, please contact Burdette Robinson at mbrobinson777@gmail.com or 837-7717, or Carol Uzzle at discipleship@reveilleumc.org, or 359-6041, ext. 117.

United Methodist Women Spiritual Life Retreat
Are you over burdened with the demands of family life, work and - yes, church?
Come and refresh your soul at the 5th annual Spiritual Life Retreat at Reveille on February 19. It's better than a day spa and the food is far yummier!
Denise Bennett, our spiritual guide for the morning, is a professional storyteller and a chaplain at the Hermitage in Richmond. She is also a gifted musician and will be playing the harp to calm and sooth us. She has told stories in many settings - churches, schools, theatres, retirement communities, hospitals and festivals. She has led worship for such diverse denominations as Four Square Gospel to Roman Catholic to Unitarian. Denise will help us to survive the seasons of our lives and help us to put God at the center, no matter how busy we are.
The Spiritual Life Retreat is sponsored by the Reveille United Methodist Women and is open to all women at Reveille, in the Richmond District and beyond. Child care will be provided. Registration and coffee begin at 8.30 am. The retreat starts at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude with lunch at 12:00 noon.
The cost for the morning is $25, which includes materials and guest speaker, welcome coffee and breakfast snacks, a lunch of crab cakes or chicken with coleslaw, corn bread and Key Lime pie for dessert.
