What is Your Commitment to Reveille Church?

Stewardship Campaign looks toward Consecration Sunday - November 21

Earlier this week, Reveille members and friends were mailed pledge cards and additional information for the Sharing the Love of Christ campaign for the church's 2011 operating budget. We will have the opportunity to bring our pledges to the altar as part of all worship services on Consecration Sunday, November 21*.

Reveille members Jill Gaynor, Pete Watson, and Martha Hodges will share their personal thoughts and experiences regarding stewardship at The Point, and the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services on Sunday, November 14. As you listen to their messages, consider the ways you commit your own time, talents and gifts in service to our congregation, our church, our community and God's kingdom.

Stewardship is sometimes mistaken as a synonym for fundraising, but it is much more than that. Stewardship is an outward sign of an inner commitment. Good stewardship encourages us to put God first and to order our priorities to reflect this commitment. Through our stewardship, we strive to share Christ's love each day.

Our pledges to the Sharing the Love of Christ campaign will support Reveille's ministries and all of the day-to-day operations of our church. As we move closer to Consecration Sunday, please prayerfully consider your pledge.

(*Pledge cards also will be available at The Point and in pew racks in the chapel and sanctuary beginning November 14. If you need additional pledge calculator worksheets, weekly/monthly giving tables, or Electronic Fund Transfer authorization forms, please contact the church office at 359-6041.)

Questions about the campaign? Following is a brief Q&A:

Q: Hasn't Reveille already conducted two pledge campaigns this year?

A: Yes. In the spring, the church launched the "Making a Difference in God's World" capital campaign to fund our building project that will expand youth facilities, construct a new chapel, provide enhanced space for our music ministry, and more. Simultaneously, the church conducted a delayed campaign to fund the 2010 operating budget.

Q: Why do we need another campaign this year?

A: The 2010 operating campaign received 284 adult pledges - 53 less than the previous campaign. Despite this decrease in pledges, giving has increased over last year. This situation - giving is up, pledges are down - makes planning difficult. We believe the timing of the 2010 campaign may have caused confusion; clearly, however, Reveille members have continued to support the church and its ministries.

Q: I give regularly without pledging. Why should I pledge?

A: Our financial gifts, whether or not they reflect a pledge, fund Reveille's ministries, help maintain the church's physical plant, support the salaries of our pastors and staff, and more. The advantage of a pledge is that it allows staff to develop an accurate, responsible budget and plan more effectively to meet the needs of the church.

Q: What is the goal of the new campaign?

A: We want to broaden the church's base of support and encourage everyone to make a pledge and participate in supporting Reveille's many outstanding ministries. We believe that a target of 400 pledges can be reached in this campaign.

Glorious Gifts and Reveille's Outreach Projects

Westview Camperships and Rebuilding Together

A campership to Westview on the James offers an inner-city child an opportunity to leave the harsh concrete jungle of their day-to-day life and escape into God's beautiful outdoors.  At camp the children swim, take long walks in the woods identifying bugs, plants and trees, learn new songs, meet Glorious Gifts logonew friends, play and laugh - all in the safety of loving and supportive camp counselors.  Children are selected by their school to receive a campership based on their financial need and their willingness to participate in all activities and abide by camp rules. Camperships offer an opportunity to plant a seed and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit with a network of more than 200 affiliates across the United States. The mission is to preserve affordable housing by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners. There are 24 million low-income homeowners in America. That number is predicted to grow to an astonishing 28.5 million by 2010. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities over essential home repairs and modifications.

Here in Richmond, on the last Saturday in April, volunteers converge upon a preselected low-income neighborhood to bring approximately 50-60 homes up to code and provide a better quality of living that otherwise probably would not happen. Participation of Reveille members and friends, young and old, skilled and unskilled, has increased such that we are able to sponsor two homes each year.

Westview Camperships and Rebuilding Together are two of Reveille's outreach projects that are participating in Glorious Gifts this December. Our goal is to raise $12,625 for Westview Camperships and $6,150 for Rebuilding Together through Glorious Gifts.  This is the main fundraiser for these projects.  Please prayerfully consider this when making your holiday shopping list this season.

Glorious Gifts and Reveille's Outreach Projects

Friends of the Homeless and CARITAS

Richmond Friends of the Homeless is a private non-profit association devoted to making a difference in the lives of the less advantaged.  It began over 20 years ago with one woman, Shawnee Glorious Gifts logoHansen, serving lunch in south Richmond from the trunk of her car. Today, this organization serves over 1,500 meals each week at two locations, one south of Richmond and one downtown.  In addition, food baskets and donated clothes, blankets and other necessities are distributed to those in need.

Reveille Friends of the Homeless has been involved for many years with helping Richmond Friends of the Homeless fulfill it's mission "to strengthen and enrich the community life of the underprivileged and homeless" in the Richmond area.  Each fourth Thursday of the month, Reveille volunteers prepare and serve a hot lunch to hungry and appreciative guests.  The menu includes chicken, potato casserole, green beans, bread and dessert.  The potato casseroles are prepared by Reveille volunteers, the bread and desserts are donated by area businesses, and the chicken and other items are purchased with funds donated for this ministry.  We serve approximately 180 hot lunches on the fourth Thursdays.  We distribute the same number of bag lunches on the fourth Monday of each month.  The food for the bagged lunches is provided by and prepared by our older elementary children, Reveille Kids Called to Care.  They and their parents also host a meal during the Christmas season.

Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter, otherwise known as CARITAS, was formed to meet the needs of area homeless affected by the lack of temporary housing. Annually, Reveille hosts up to 28 people from the Family Focus program. Reveille provides the evening meal, breakfast, lunch for the following day and overnight lodging. Volunteers greet the guests, serve dinner, pack lunches, and stay overnight, serving breakfast the next morning. In the evening, volunteers transport guests to and from laundry and shower facilities and help entertain the children. CARITAS at Reveille has a long history and has typically involved over 100 volunteers a year. Volunteers often report that their experience with CARITAS is very rewarding and it gives them a chance to step out of their ordinary lives.

CARITAS and Friends of the Homeless are two of Reveille's outreach projects that are participating in Glorious Gifts this December. Our goal is to raise $2,500 for CARITAS and $7,000 for Friends of the Homeless through Glorious Gifts.  This is the main fundraiser for these projects. Please prayerfully consider this when making your holiday shopping list this season.

A Note of Appreciation

The Outreach Committee would like to say a big THANK YOU to all those who participated in the recent Stop Hunger Now project.  Your efforts were an overwhelming success!  Working together in the true spirit of Christ, some 150 Reveille members - first graders to senior citizens - helped feed the world's hungry by packaging 12,000 meals. It was truly inspiring to see all generations of our Reveille family working together to make a difference in God's world.
