NEW YORK JUNIOR TENNIS LEAGUE ANNOUNCES 
2010 Boys & Girls Varsity All-Star Teams

New York Junior Tennis League (NYJTL) today announced its 2010 NYJTL Boys & Girls Varsity All-Teams, consisting of 20 players, including 10 boys and 10 girls from New York City's public, private and parochial schools. 
 
The All-Stars, who are selected by a panel of experts from New York Junior Tennis League and the Mayor's Cup Committee, are being recognized for their accomplishments on the tennis court, sportsmanship, and academic excellence.  
 
Six boys and three girls are being recognized for their achievements for a second consecutive year. Nine different New York City schools are represented in the All-Star line-up. The graduating seniors are Asika Isoh, Jonathan Raude and Filip Malaric; each boasting acceptance into respected Universities and recruited to play on NCAA Division I Tennis Teams. 
 
2010 Boys Varsity All-Star Team:
 
David Arroyave - St. Francis Preparatory School (Junior)
This year's Mayor's Cup was seeded fourth and advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to eventual champion, Jonathan Raude. A NYJTL Tournament Team Member, Arroyave leads his high school team at the #1 singles position. 
 
Kilby Featherston - St. Francis Preparatory School (Junior)
As a junior, Featherston reached the Mayor's Cup Boy's Varsity Doubles Title for the second straight year with partner Christopher Jimenez. The team was able to win the 2010 Mayor's Cup presented by TMZ Wireless without losing a set. Featherston will be taking time off this summer from competitive tennis to attend classes at Stanford University in San Francisco, California where he plans to study Political Science, Greek and Latin. 
 
Ryoma Haraguchi - NYC Lab School (Freshman)
A powerful freshman who reached the round of 16 at this year's Mayor's Cup presented by TMZ Wireless. He is one of the top junior players here in the Eastern Section and is a player to look out for in the coming years. 
 
Asika Isoh - Queens Gateway Health Sciences (Senior)
Isoh is a talented senior and a member of the NYJTL Tournament Team. A Queens native, he reached this year's Mayor's Cup final for the third straight year before having to retire due to injury. The Mayor's Cup Champion in 2009, Isoh was highly recruited by many colleges. He will be attending West Point Military Academy at the end of June.  
 
Christopher Jimenez - St. Francis Preparatory School (Junior)
Jimenez reached the Boys Varsity doubles finals at the 2010 Mayor's Cup for the second consecutive year with teammate Kilby Featherston. This summer he will be working for Gordon Kent's New England Tennis Camp as a counselor-in-training; while continuing to compete in summer tournaments. 
 
Daniel Lakham - Francis Lewis High School (Junior)
Lackham represents the Francis Lewis Patriots as the #1 singles player. Seeded sixth in this year's Mayor's Cup, Lakham advanced all the way to the Quarterfinals where he fell to 4th seeded, David Arroyave from St. Francis Preparatory School. 
 
Filip Malaric - Hunter College High School (Senior)
A senior and the #1 singles player at Hunter College High School, Malaric plans to attend Binghamton University next fall where he hopes to make the starting line-up for the Bearcats. 
 
Jonathan Raude - Benjamin Cardozo High School (Senior)
A Boston College bound senior, Raude captured the Mayor's Cup singles title for the first time by defeating fellow NYJTL Tournament Team Member, Asika Isoh. One of the most accomplished players in New York City, Raude helped Benjamin Cardozo High School reach the team finals event against Horace Mann High School. Raude is #11 in the Eastern Section. 
 
2010 Girls Varsity All-Star Team:
 
Angela Assal - The High School of Math Science and Engineering at City College (Freshman)
As a freshman, Assal had a strong performance at this year's Mayor's Cup, reaching the semifinals against another standout player, Becky Shtilkind from Leon M. Goldstein High School. 
 
Katie Derienzo - St. Francis Preparatory School (Sophomore)
A sophomore from Douglaston, New York and a member of the NYJTL Tournament Team, Derienzo is a two time Mayor's Cup Girls Varsity Doubles Champion. She captured this year's title with partner, Marylen Santos. Derienzo is ranked in the top 60 for the Eastern Section.
 
Arielle N. Griffin - Benjamin Cardozo High School (Sophomore)
A talented tenth grader and member of the NYJTL Tournament Team, Griffin represents Benjamin Cardozo HS as the #2 singles player. Griffin captured this year's Mayor's Cup as the fourth seed without dropping a set.
 
Nakia Miller - Home Schooled (Freshman)
A standout freshman from Rosedale, New York, Miller reached the Semifinals of the 2010 Mayor's Cup Tournament. Miller will begin competing in the USTA Eastern 16-and-under division by the end of the summer.  
 
Marylen Santos - St. Francis Preparatory School (Sophomore)
Santos is a sophomore at St. Francis Preparatory School and won her first title at the 2010 Mayor's Cup Girls Varsity Doubles Title with partner Katie Derinenzo. A member of the NYJTL Tournament Team, Santos is ranked in the top 30 in the Eastern Section for the Girls16-and-under division. 
 
Becky Shtilkind - Leon M. Goldstein High School (Sophomore)
A Brooklyn native and seeded second in the 2010 Mayor's Cup, Shtilkind advanced all the way to the finals. Shtilkind was the 2008 Mayor's Cup middle-school singles champion and is ranked in the top 10 in the east and top 100 in the nation. She will be competing this summer in the Super Nationals Girls 16-and-under division 
 
Gabrielle Sullivan - Poly Preparatory High School (Junior)
The third seed at this year's Mayor's Cup, Sullivan advanced all the way to the round of 32, but had to withdraw due to illness. She is ranked in the top 15 in the Girls 18-and-under division in the Eastern section. Gabrielle will be competing in the Super National Clay Courts in Memphis Tennessee and the Super National Hard Courts in San Jose, California. 
 
Pauline Syrnik - St. Francis Preparatory High School (Junior)
A junior, Syrnik advanced to the rd. of 16 of the Mayor's Cup Girls Varsity Singles. Syrnik has been a major part to the St. Francis Preparatory Tennis Team, as they gained their 11th consecutive Mayor's Cup Girl's Varsity Team Title.
 
Alexis Tashiro - Francis Lewis High School (Sophomore)
A Jamaica, Queens native, Tashiro is the #1 singles player on her team. She led Francis Lewis to a semifinal finish in this year's Mayor's Cup Team Event and is ranked 23rd in the USTA Eastern section for girls 16-and-under division, Tashiro will be entering the USTA Eastern 18-and-under age division next fall. 
 
Kathleen Uy - St. Francis Preparatory High School (Senior)
A senior, Uy reached the Quarterfinals of the 2010 Mayor's Cup. Uy helped St. Francis Prep at #3 singles to capture the Girls Varsity Team Event for the 11th consecutive year. She is ranked 25 in the USTA Eastern Section and 239 in the Nation. She is currently considering which college to attend in the fall. 
 
 
The Mayor's Cup presented by TMZ Wireless is the largest scholastic tennis event in the United States, second only to the US Open in the number of players competing, bringing together more than 600 participants from New York City's public, private and parochial schools competing in 11 different events.  A tournament committee selects seventeen scholarship and award recipients and the 2010 New York City Boys' and Girls' Varsity All-Star Tennis Teams from the competitors.
