About E.J. Schrader

Located in West Palm Beach, Florida, E. J. Schrader Mattress Co. has been delivering the ultimate sleep experience for over 50 years.

EJ SchraderIn 1956, after more than 25 years of manufacturing mattresses for other brand names, Enoch Schrader, began manufacturing mattresses and box springs under his own name. Even from those humble beginnings Enoch Schrader chose not to mass produce bedding as his competitors did. He knew everyone does not sleep alike, and should have the option of a sleep system tailored to their individual needs, shapes, and size - at no added cost! He passed on those values to his son Blair, who after 50 years in the business, runs the day to day operations.

Every mattress and box spring that Enoch Schrader manufactures carries with it a true seal of approval. All materials inside and out are of the highest quality available and tests show Schrader mattress sets hold their firmness and responsive resilience longer than those mass-produced by the larger mattress brand groups.
While Schrader has made many technological advancements, we have not changed the way bedding is made - one at a time, with precision and care. Many of our employees who sew and assemble our bedding have been with us for many years. Their experience and skill have helped us become one of the best independent bedding manufacturers around.

The E.J. Schrader Mattress Company has come a long way since 1956, and continues today in the fine tradition of total dedication to quality. Under the watchful eye of E.J., Blair, his wife Diane, and his sisters as board of directors promise to maintain that quality for the next generation.

House Manager Spotlight

Charles Harjo

Q:     How did you get started in Household Management?

A:      It is a very interesting story on how I started in this career. It started when I was sent to Germany by the Army as a duty rotation position.  I had been doing cooking competitions for many years and had made the Army culinary team. When I arrived in Charles HarjoGermany at that replacement station I was approached by two gentlemen in suits and asked if I was SGT Harjo, I replied yes and they said your coming with us. I had no idea what I had done to be in what I presumed trouble. I was escorted to a black 750i BMW and told I was going to Heidelberg to work for the commanding General. I had been approached before about a position like this with the commander of Fort Bragg and felt I would rather stay in the position I currently held. Upon arrival to the Generals home I met the General and a friend I had been in cooking competitions with. They explained to me what the position entailed and I thought "why not"   I learned that it was only about 20% of cooking and the other 80% was dealing with vendors, travel, event planning and organization among other things. I found that I loved doing this type of work and continued the rest of my military career working for four star Generals. The General I was working for in Miami was getting close to retirement and told me that I had made such an impact on his and his family's life that he wanted to show his appreciation by sending me to Starkey house management school for when I retired. After the school and the General's retirement I went back to work for one of my previous generals and he and I retired within a couple months of each other. Upon retirement I went to work in the private sector and found it to be even more exciting and fun.

Q:      Do you have any formal training or degrees for household management?

A:      As mentioned before I attended Starkey's school of house and estate management in October 2003.

Q:
What have been some of the more difficult situations that you have run into
       on the job?

A:     I have found the most difficult situation to be dealing with the speed at which the private sector changes their mind from minute to minute and day to day.

Q:
What type of principal or homeowner do you prefer to work for?

A:      I prefer a principal that isn't a micro manager and one that can and does communicate with the HM. I have worked in a home where I had to call the business manager to talk with the personal assistant to schedule a sit down with the principal that I came in contact with daily. This does not make for a very good working environment.

Q:
What direction would like to see the domestic industry go in for the future?

A:       I would like to see the domestic industry mirror the ACF (American Culinary Federation) where knowledge and the current trends are shared with everyone. In the ACF we have city, area, state and regional chapters that hold monthly meetings that help share knowledge and have others in our field that we can talk to and share experiences with, and a yearly national chapter that holds a meeting to see which direction the industry is going and how we feel about the direction and if we should change.

Q:      What are your goals for the future?

A:      My future goal is to find the right family to work for the next 10 to 20 years.

Q:      What are your interests and hobbies?

A:       My hobbies are simple I love to fish, fresh water, salt water and have recently     found fly fishing which I love. I also love to build and fly RC airplanes; yes I'm just a big kid at heart. I guess I love the building part more than the flying as it allows me to work with my hands to create things that others find beautiful and see it actually work.
