House Manager Spotlight
~ Featuring ~
Jenny McCready
Q: How did you get started in Household Management?
A: My entry into this industry was an accidental happening. In 2001 I was selling cars. I loved the people, but I am not a car salesperson. I decided to leave the business, and in the meantime was cleaning homes for friends to make some money while I figured out what I wanted to do "when I grew up." Through referrals I ended up taking care of a couple's home starting out two days a week. It quickly turned into a full time position and I was running the home as a full time House Manager. I was a natural for it and it quickly became my passion. In fact through a life coaching course that my first employers sent me to, I learned my life's work and purpose. "I am a Miracle Worker, and in my presence others experience the miracle of their lives." Truer words have never been spoken. It has been eight years now in this industry, and I am still excited to get up and go to work every day. It doesn't get any better than that.
Q: Do you have any formal training or degrees for household management?
A: No I do not. My training came from my grandmother, my childhood, and life experiences. I ask myself, if I were paying me to do this job, what would I expect to see at the end of the day, the week, the year? With that as my guide, it becomes very simple.
Since I have a thirst for knowledge and improvement I am constantly researching and learning. I look for new information on how to care for, clean, protect, everything that I come into contact with. I do believe however that there are skills that cannot be learned in formal training. Understanding the need for excellence, detail, anticipation of the needs, making sure that the needed item is on hand before the need is known. That is not a skill that can be taught. It is something that is innate to the service minded individual.
Q: What have been some of the more difficult or challenging situations that you have run into on the job?
A: The most challenging situation I have experienced has been working in a situation where I was a rectangle in a round hole. The stress experienced when I believe that a 5 star standard is required and easy to attain and keep, when others believe that the standard is to do as little as possible, is extremely difficult to put into words.
Q: What type of principal or homeowner do you prefer to work for?
A: I appreciate an employer that is more casual in lifestyle. I also like to work for someone that understands that I am accomplished and capable and will stand back and let me do my job while also understanding when direction is needed. Q: What direction would like to see the domestic industry go in for the future?
A: I would like to see more networking among the House/Estate Managers and domestic staff. Being able to have a place to ask questions and find support from others who are on the frontlines. Being able to reach out to others in the industry would be helpful when facing challenges that arise when dealing with difficult employees, vendors, employers, making job transitions......you get the picture.
Q: What are your goals for the future?
A: I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's in Business Management. I am also pursuing a minor in Construction Management. That will supplement my Associates in Applied Sciences. I was in one of the first Ford Motor Training ASSET programs in the 1980's. Q: What are your interests and hobbies?
A: I ride a Honda Shadow Aero 750. Reading. I finally learned to crochet, which my daughter thinks is quite appropriate now that I am Nana. I enjoy cooking and throwing the occasional dinner party, Micro-brew beers and wine, and finding that fun cocktail for the season. |
