Spring is in full bloom in the Northeast, and it is magnificent. Trees in bloom along with daffodil, tulips and azaleas - we have all the pleasures of spring. Like spring, the work of the Peace Flag Project has been blooming. We're busier than ever. Our recent events at the Roger Williams Park Zoo - one for Party for the Planet and the other for Jane Goodall Day were amazing. In addition, we've had events with the Providence After School Alliance, Sowams Elementary School, First Unitarian Church Coming-of-Age Program and the Kingston Congregational Church Interfaith Peace Service, to
name only a few, and we have more interesting events coming up. I hope the sun in shining on your face and in your life.
In peace and gratitude,

The Peace Flag Project: Recent Activities and Events | | Mother's Day--Peace Day | |
Did you know that Mother's Day was originally proposed as a day for mothers to unite and speak out for peace? Julia Ward Howe (famous for writing the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic") was horrified by the carnage of the Civil War and called women to unite against such human devastation. She began promoting the idea of a "Mother's Day for Peace, honoring peace, motherhood and womanhood. In 1870 she issued her Mother's Day Proclamation. Parts of it read: "Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience. "We women of one country will be too tender to those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs... "Let them [women] solemnly take counsel with each other as the means whereby the great human family can live in peace... "In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and
at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, and the great and general interests of peace." For the full text of the proclamation, please click here.
As we celebrate our mothers and motherhood this Sunday, let us set aside some part of our day to think of peace in our hearts, in our homes and communities and in the world. We all want to spare our sons and daughters the anguish of war and violence. It would be wonderful to use our tenderness to revive the idea of women uniting for peace. As half of the planet, we could be an enormous force for a better, more peaceful world. If indeed our hearts are gentler and kinder and more generous, let's use thse wonderful gifts to create that more peaceful world.

| Jane Goodall Day | |
Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence, RI Saturday, May 1 was a special day at Roger Williams Park Zoo: Jane Goodall Day. The amazing Dr. Jane Goodall spent the day at the zoo, celebrating the Roots and Shoots program there along with honoring the important American Burying Beetle research sponsored by the zoo. At the age of 76, this remarkable woman tirelessly travels the world for 50 out of 52 weeks in a year. She is devoted to the fight for the rights of endangered animals and for the environment. Dr. Jane also spent hours signing her books. She promised she would stay at the Zoo to meet everyone who wanted to meet her. Keeping her promise, Dr. Jane spent about five hours signing books for a very long line of her RI fans. It was a most thrilling day, and hundreds of people made peace flags.
