"Energy-efficient ways pay off for homeowner"
Michael Slattery, a South Dennis resident, is saving nearly $900 a year on utility bills by installing and revamping his home. Some of the changes he's made include: - Receiving an energy audit by the Cape Light Compact helped him identify "trouble spots" in his house where energy was wasted.
- He installed compact fluorescent lightbulbs - or CFLs - throughout his home.
- Heat was escaping through his attic and roof, so Slatterly sealed the area, installed 10 more inches of insulation and sealed up areas around wiring in his home.
- Installed programmable thermostats as well as ENERGY STAR rated air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
- Covering exposed skylights with plastic and "colorful tapestries" helped reduced heat flow out the windows.
