Avoiding a winter plumbing disaster
January's here and the temperatures are lower than ever. Avoid a burst pipe and an expensive clean-up with these simple tips:
Insulate exposed pipes. Both hot and cold water pipes can freeze, so check if there are any exposed pipes in areas such as the bathroom or in the basement. Wrap foam insulation around the pipes and secure with tape to help prevent freezing.
Use additional precautions during extreme cold. Leave closet and cabinet doors open so warmer air can circulate around the pipes, even if you've already insulated them. Letting a small amount of water drip out of a faucet will keep the water moving and prevent freezing. Just make sure to turn the water off once the temperatures rise.
