Green technology: a roof that changes color?
A graduate team of researchers at MIT have come up with a prototype roof tile that changes color between black and white depending on the outside temperature, reports Builder Magazine.
The principles are basic: the color white reflects heat. The prototype, dubbed "Thermeleon," contains a polymer and water solution that reacts to temperature - when it's cold, the polymer remains dissolved and the color black shows through. When it's warmer, the polymer condenses into a white color that reflects light.
While the tile is still in early development stages, it could prove to be a valuable green building material that saves energy costs by reducing the need to heat and cool a home based on the season.
