Connection Before Correction - Mutual Respect Parentiing

Greetings!

Are you building bridges of understanding with your children? Or, are you building walls that will get more difficult to climb as your children get older? A relationship built on walls of disconnection will probably last throughout adulthood. Here are common wall building attitudes, beliefs and actions that parents hold on to as the "truth."  Mom Dad large Brick Wall

  • My child is never going to stop doing this misbehavior. (ex. Not picking up clothes, not taking over the dishes or not walking the dog.)
  • Whenever my child is irresponsible or misbehaves it means I am a bad parent.
  • I know what is best for my child so my child needs to obey at all times.
  • Getting angry at children or taking things away makes them feel bad which "teaches" them to change their misbehavior.

These rigid and critical beliefs hinder our ability to think flexibly and compassionately. Our children need clear expectations, nonjudgmental listening, and understanding from the adults in their lives.

Consider embracing these bridge building attitudes, actions and beliefs that encourage parent-child

connection.

  • My child needs to feel my Kids Open Wall emotional support and acceptance rather than judgment or criticism.
  • My child is unique and has her own developmental path to follow rather than me determining the path.
  • We all struggle and make mistakes. This is the learning process.
  • I will continue to show love, rather than withdraw love, no matter how difficult my children act.

Not only will your changes improve your relationships, you will feel happier being positive and compassionate. Start the new year with letting go of one wall building belief and replacing it with a bridge building belief.

Happy Parenting,

Understanding 11 year-old Development Creates Compassion

"What you taught made a BIG difference in my relationship with my daughter. Most important was your stressing how an 11 year old is working on how to define HERSELF in relation to the WORLD (and not to Mommie) and that this is an important task for her. So I was most impressed when, one evening out of the blue, she took 20 photo albums out of my closet. She went through each of them and picked out all the photos she wanted to put in an album of her own. Since you had clued me in, I understood what she was doing. I really encouraged her and helped her with her project when she asked. Interestingly, she had pix of herself with sister, her cats, other relatives, but none with me. I'm so glad you explained why she would do that, so I was just happy to watch and see her grow in her understanding of herself. I also loved you tip about not re-introducing a topic they have brought up before unless they bring it up again themselves.

I hope to be able to come to a class again soon."

The heart of one person moves another's. If one's own heart is closed, then the doors of others people's hearts will also shut tight. On the other hand, someone who makes all those around him or her into allies, bathing them in the sunlight of spring, will be treasured by all.
