bridges 2 understanding

Greetings!

How many of you have shopping on your mind? How many of you have children telling you what they want you to buy them? The big question is How Much Is Enough?

Sub questions are how much do my children need? What will the impact be of buying too much? Will they suffer more in the long run from having too little, too much or just enough?

I explore these questions in my attached article  How Much Is Enough?

I have felt that less is better because i believe it avoids the feeling of privilege that is prevalent amongst children. If my daughter wanted, for example, shoes that cost too much, i would tell her how much money i would contribute and the rest was up to her. This mind set continued through college and i believe contributed to her ability to support herself financially as a 23 year-old.

Enjoy the article and email me to let me know what you think is enough.

Benefits of Parenting Education

Parent coaching story from mom of spirited twin boy and girl ages 6.

I contacted Cynthia because my current reward / punishment parenting strategies were not reducing conflict with my children. I was particularly concerned that my son would travel down a "bad path" and that my daughter was struggling with her social skills with friends.

Time outs, taking privileges or things away and yelling were not improving the situation; only making it worse. Cynthia's Mutual Respect Parenting Philosophy appealed to me. In only 5 hours of office coaching and 1 ˝ hours of home coaching, I have learned new attitudes, beliefs and actions that have dramatically enhanced my interactions with my children.

Cynthia taught me that the power of change is within my changes, not by trying to change my children. Here are some examples of what I have put into practice.

Cynthia taught me the importance of connecting first before correcting behavior. Part of her prescription was for me to learn how to be more playful. My kids and I now have "sock fights" which has resulted in greater laughter, closeness and release of pent up tensions. This will become a regular activity of spending special time with my kids. With greater connection comes greater cooperation.

Directing and commanding by barking out orders were my prevalent parenting strategies that met with resistance from my strong-willed kids. Even my so-called "requests" were often met with a "No." Now I focus on connecting first then stating needs and giving directions.

Here is an example. In the morning rather than commanding, "It's time to put your shoes on." I first call out their names; this even works when I don't have eye contact! "Bobby, Patty, " then I wait for a response that they have heard me. "Yes, Mommy." "It's time to put your shoes on now so we can leave for school." I am amazed that both kids quickly did what I told them without resistance or arguing.

My small shifts in my attitudes, speaking respectfully and stating needs has created a significantly increased atmosphere of cooperation and happiness in my household.

When I hear an upset, now, rather than trying to "put a lid on it", I work on responding empathetically first, Then I gently point out what he may be feeling. "I can see that you are very upset now. Do you need to do something to help you calm down?" Often, with this empathetic response he will say, "I'm O.K. now."

Now I know how to help him manage his quick temper so it is defused without hurting others. I have daily experiences of improved cooperation and happiness about my own behavior and my children's.

Thank you Cynthia for your insightful expertise and I look forward to having your support in the years to come.

"Cynthia,

The parents gave us great feedback on the workshop. They enjoyed learning new techniques for their children and they are interested in having the same workshop for those who could not attend. Thank you again for everything."

Establish Absolute Happiness

"Such things as money, fame and material possessions offer a fleeting satisfaction, something that can be called relative happiness. However, when we transform our lives internally, when we develop within ourselves a brilliant inner palace, then we can be said to have established absolute happiness. If we develop a state of mind as vast and resplendent as a magnificent palace, then nothing--- no matter where we go or what we may encounter in life---can undermine or destroy our happiness."
