Convention 2012 breaking news: NYFD Lt. to speak at 9/11 tribute Tuesday

Mr. Butler was inside the North Tower of the World Trade Center as it collapsed. You will hear the amazing story of how he and 12 others became trapped in a stairwell as the tower fell, and how life changed from that moment on.

What: 9/11 Tribute

When: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 - 11:45am

Where: IBANYS 39th Annual Convention - Turning Stone Resort, Verona, NY

  Being Frank: The Enduring Things

By Frank Capaldo, IBANYS President & CEO

"After the cheers have died down and the stadium is empty, after the headlines have been written and after you are back in the quiet of your room and the championship ring has been placed on the dresser and all of the pomp and fanfare has faded, the enduring things that are left are: the dedication to excellence, the dedication to victory, and the dedication to doing with our lives the very best we can to make the world a better place to live." - Vince Lombardi

In a recent conversation, I caught myself saying, "In the old days..." I spoke of values that were instilled in me during childhood, helping to shape my professional ethics and leadership style. With great pride, I call those values - hard work, honesty, loyalty and commitment among others - old fashioned, time tested, enduring.

Vince Lombardi the revered professional football coach who led the Green Bay Packers to nine consecutive winning seasons and several national championships, was known for his infectious enthusiasm and his inspiring locker room speeches. With his focus on drive, dedication and obedience, he would be considered old fashioned.

But is old fashioned wrong? Is a new print magazine old fashioned? Is Community banking old fashioned?

IBANYS announces partnership with Pentegra Retirement Services

IBANYS is pleased to announce a preferred partnership with Pentegra Retirement Service's qualified retirement plan products, Bank Owned Life Insurance (BOLI), and Non-Qualified Plan Products.

Pentegra's retirement plan products were chosen after a review and analysis by IBANYS, based on a wide range of factors including Pentegra's ability to meet the needs of IBANYS members with a full array of retirement product offerings, industry expertise, and bank-focused solutions.

Pentegra President Robert C. Albanese said, "We are honored and grateful to be recognized by the Independent Bankers Association of New York State. We look forward to a long and rewarding relationship."

A critical factor in IBANYS' decision was Pentegra's 65 plus years of community bank retirement plan "best practices." Pentegra's retirement programs, including its 401(k) plans, defined benefit pension  plans, ESOPs, KSOPs, profit sharing programs, and BOLI programs offer distinct advantages for banks, including Pentegra's unique fiduciary role, which relieves banks and their boards of fiduciary responsibilities associated with sponsoring a retirement plan.

IBANYS President and CEO Frank Capaldo said: "IBANYS is pleased to announce Pentegra Retirement Services as an IBANYS Preferred Provider. Their qualified and non-qualified products and services, and their many years of experience in the industry, make them an important IBANYS business partner going forward. Pentegra can provide enormous value to community banks throughout New York State, and we look forward to a mutually beneficial partnership."

Pentegra currently provides its products and services to more than 700 financial institution clients sponsoring over 1,200 retirement plans nationwide. With over six decades of working with community banks, Pentegra offers IBANYS members an added advantage of top industry expertise and proven bank-focused solutions for retirement programs.

For more information about Pentegra's qualified retirement plan products, contact Wade Connor at wconnor@pentegra.com or (704) 332-9740. For more on Pentegra's non-qualified plan products and BOLI, contact Fabrizio D'Uva at fduva@pentegra.com or (609) 584-7400.

Congratulations to Pentegra on becoming an IBANYS Preferred Provider!

   Government Relations Update

By Steve Rice, IBANYS Director of Government Relations, Policy & Services Development

Governor Cuomo recently signed S.219A (Maziarz)/A.9787 (Robinson), which relates to preauthorized electronic fund transfers. The legislation, now Chapter 403 of the Laws of 2012.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) proposed a rule to require lenders to offer a no-point, no-fee mortgage loan option to make it easier for consumers to compare loan term options. Lenders would also have to reduce interest rates when consumers chose to pay upfront points or fees. The proposal would also establish qualifications and screen standards for mortgage-loan originators, prohibit the payment of steering incentives to originators, and place restrictions on arbitration clauses and the financing of credit insurance. October 16 is the deadline for comments.

Don't miss the Monday morning, September 10 session of IBANYS' 39th Annual Convention. Featured will be a Regulatory Panel Discussion with representatives from the FDIC, OCC, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, NYS Department of Financial Services and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau...other speakers that morning will include ICBA President Cam Fine with an update from Washington, and NYS Superintendent of Financial Services Benjamin Lawsky.

Remember When...

As IBANYS members prepare to gather for our 39th Annual Convention (September 9, 10 and 11 at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY), it got us thinking about how our Association began. Did you know the 39 "founders" of IBANYS - sparked by their opposition to the proposed omnibus banking bill -  launched the new organization in 1974 to protect their interests?

Republicans ruled the roost in Albany. Nelson Rockefeller was in his final months as Governor before being named Vice President. The Banking Superintendent was Harry Albright. NYS Senate Majority Leader Warren Anderson (R-Binghamton) and  Assembly Speaker was Perry Duryea (R-Montauk) were the legislative leaders. New York had 41 members of Congress (next year, we'll have 27), and our two U.S. Senators were Republican Jacob Javitz and Conservative James Buckley.

Remember some of the events and people "in the news" that year?

President Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign, and was succeeded by Vice President Ford - the only man in history to serve as an unelected Vice President and President. The Yearly Inflation Rate in the United States was 11.3%, the Year End Close of the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 616 and the federal debt was $483.9 billion. Unemployment was at  5.6%.  The average cost of a new house was  $34,900, while the average income per year was $13,900. A gallon of gas cost, on average, 55 cents, and the average cost of a new car was $3,750. The first issue of People Magazine was published, with Mia Farrow on the cover. "The Sting" won the Oscar for Best Picture. Patty Hearst, 19-year-old daughter of publisher Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped by Symbionese Liberation Army. Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time Home Run record. Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in 8 rounds to regain the Heavyweight Boxing Title in The Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire. Derek Jeter and Leonardo DiCaprio were born. Jack Benny, Ed Sullivan and Duke Ellington died. The Miami Dolphins and Oakland A's won the Super Bowl and the World Series, and Cannonade won the Kentucky Derby. 1974: All in all, quite a year!

IBANYS Exclusive: The Latest Trend in Maximizing Your Training Budgets

By Barry Thompson C.R.C.M. Managing Partner, Thompson Consulting Group

A new training trend has been developing in financial institutions across the country: Instead of sending staff members away to training conferences, banks are inviting subject matter experts to speak in-house. When you calculate event fees, airline travel, parking, meals, and time lost from work, educating your staff isn't cheap. While webinars and distance learning can in fact reduce costs, they can't replace the one-on-one experience of an expert teaching in person.

We have witnessed three methods that financial institutions are utilizing to accomplish this objective. The first is employing an expert who has already been retained by your state association, thereby reducing costs. The second is to contact the subject matter expert directly yourself. The third is to join with other financial institutions in sharing the cost of retaining an expert.          ...read the rest here.
