Greetings!

May was an important month for all - faculty, staff and students alike! Class of 2010 graduated with great success and high hopes for the future. In addition, from May 20th to June 26th John Cabot University will be hosting the

Summer Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation Lectures, which has already begun to bring students, faculty and guests together from all around the world (discover the details in the newsletter or online).

CLASS OF 2010!

On May 17 John Cabot University held Commencement exercises for the 2010 Graduating Class in the splendid gardens of Rome's Villa Aurelia. Fifty students representing fourteen countries worldwide received degrees in Art History, Business Administration, Communications, Economics and Finance, English Literature, Humanistic Studies, International Affairs, Italian Studies, Marketing, and Political Science.

After the invocation by His Excellency

Joseph Di Noia, Archbishop of Oregon City, and Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments at the Vatican, President Franco Pavoncello delivered opening remarks and welcomed graduates and parents, Trustees, faculty, staff, and distinguished guests.

Reflecting on the words of Dean William Inge ("The world belongs to those who think and act with it, who keep a finger on its pulse."), President Pavoncello said "It is my hope and my belief that at John Cabot University you were given those tools - that compass, that capacity to feel this universal pulse. The ability to think critically, the capacity to express those ideas convincingly, the willingness to stand up for a better world and for a more compassionate future."

Subsequently, Dr. Joseph Hagan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and long-time friend of JCU, greeted the audience of about five hundred and extended his best wishes to the Class of 2010.

President Pavoncello then welcomed Commencement Speaker, the Honorable David H. Thorne, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Italy and the Republic of San Marino. Ambassador Thorne actually has a lifelong personal connection to Italy, since he moved with his family to Rome in 1953 when his father was appointed by President Eisenhower to administer the Marshal Plan for Italy.

A veteran of the US Navy, outstanding investor and entrepreneur, successful author and diplomat, Ambassador Thorne is also an art lover and former President and current Board Member of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Since his arrival in Italy last year, with his intelligence, initiatives, and personal qualities, he has quickly given new impetus to the close relations between the United States and Italy.

In his thoughtful speech, Ambassador Thorne advised graduates that while they had many advantages as graduates today in a world of instant communications, this wealth of choice and information also comes with special challenges that require us to remain flexible and find our own balance. He ended by suggesting to the graduates that they be very careful before judging other people. He also urged them not to take themselves too seriously and encouraged them to take fifteen minutes each day, shut off all telephones and computers, and just think.

This year the University also  conferred an honorary degree upon Trustee and JCU alumnus Ali Reza Arabnia. Born and raised in Teheran, Mr. Arabnia came to Europe when his family left Iran after the revolution and graduated from JCU in 1983. CEO of Geico Limited in Milan, he has been a Trustee of John Cabot University since 1998 and has impressed the JCU community for his uncommon generosity and wise counsel to the Administration through the years. In his recollections of all the changes he and his family went through, he cautioned graduates that the only certainty is that nothing is ever certain and that they must be prepared to deal with all the challenges that life often presents.

The Class of 2010 valedictorian was Valeria D'Ambrosio, who graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Art History. Quoting Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard who said "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use," Valeria urged her fellow graduates to never stop exercising their freedom of thought, the most precious gift that they have in life.

Dean of Academic Affairs Mary Merva then presented diplomas to the graduating students who had completed their degrees in the 2009-2010 academic year.

Congratulations to the Class of 2010 from the entire JCU community! Ad maiora!

New Scholarship Fund Established by the Martini Foundation

President Franco Pavoncello is pleased and honored to announce that the Martini Foundation, the charitable arm of JCU Trustee Judge William J. Martini's family, has established a $400,000 scholarship fund at Villanova University to provide funds for Villanova students studying abroad at John Cabot University. The Foundation has also made a $15,000 direct donation to JCU.

The Hon. William J. Martini, a senior member of the JCU Board of Trustees, is U.S. District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey and a Former Member of the U.S. Congress.

"This donation is a great encouragement for all of us to continue along the path we have chosen to take in bringing JCU to a world class level in higher education," explains President Pavoncello. "Secondly, the donation helps cement further a very deep relationship between Villanova and John Cabot, which goes back many years and is one of the milestones of our relationships with US universities."

As an American liberal arts university in the heart of Rome, JCU welcomes degree seeking students from forty different countries and visiting students from all across the USA. This donation from the Martini Foundation recognizes the import role that visiting students have in promoting JCU's mission.

The entire JCU community joins President Pavoncello in thanking Trustee Martini for his exquisite generosity and inspiring support of the University.

JCU welcomes record number of students for the Summer I session!

The John Cabot University community is pleased to welcome incoming visiting students for the Summer I session. This is the University's largest summer session to date, with over 350 students.

Students, who hail from all across the USA and from various countries around the world, were welcomed at Fiumicino Airport by JCU staff and Student Ambassadors. After receiving their housing assignments, students were accompanied directly to their accommodations.

During the two-day Orientation period, students participated in sessions designed to acquaint them with the University and the Eternal City, as well as provide an introduction to Italian culture. In addition to a tour of JCU's Trastevere neighborhood, students also had the opportunity to take walking tours of ancient Rome and to get tips on enjoying the city while staying safe.

President Franco Pavoncello and Dean of Academic Affairs Mary Merva greeted students at a special Welcome Barbecue. In the evenings, students had the opportunity to meet new and returning JCU students at several "Meet and Greet" events.

In order to enhance students' summer session experience, the Office of Student Services has prepared a wide variety of activities including yoga, Tai chi, and pilates classes, Italian cooking classes, discounted tickets to the opera and other performances in Rome, and guided excursions to points of interest outside of the city.
