| Bullying Hurts Everyone, Not Just the Victim |
At first, the word "bullying" conjures up images of a tough, wise-cracking kid verbally taunting and embarrassing another, pushing, punching, poking, tripping, threatening, taking his possessions, ripping his clothes, defacing his property... all behaviors that are clearly inappropriate and that demand immediate adult intervention. But what about the child who because of her small stature and difficulties with expressive language, is rejected by peers when she tries to sit next to them on the school bus and taunted when she tries to join in a conversation? Or the student who is fearful of walking through the hallways in school because of the dozens of times (by any number of peers) he has been shoved, face first, into a locker or had his backpack yanked off his body causing him to fall backwards (sometimes on the staircase!) resulting in his being late for class, not to mention the physical and emotional pain he's had to endure. | Bullying and Youth with Disabilities and Special Health Needs |
Children with disabilities-such as physical, developmental, intellectual, emotional, and sensory disabilities-are at an increased risk of being bullied. Any number of factors- physical vulnerability, social skill challenges, or intolerant environments-may increase the risk. Research suggests that some children with disabilities may bully others as well. Kids with special health needs, such as epilepsy or food allergies, also may be at higher risk of being bullied. Bullying can include making fun of kids because of their allergies or exposing them to the things they are allergic to. In these cases, bullying is not just serious, it can mean life or death. | October is 'Bullying Awareness Month' But When is 'Most Kids Don't Bully Month'? |
October is National Bullying Awareness Month and that's mostly a good thing because it reminds us that bullying can be hurtful and can be prevented. But part of "awareness," is being aware that most kids don't bully. In fact, numerous studies have shown that the norm among most American (and other) kids is to treat each other respectfully. I Am
I am the person you bullied at school, I am the person who didn't know how to be cool, I am the person you alienated, I am the person you ridiculed and hated.
I am the person who sat on her own, I am the person who walked home alone, I am the person you scared every day, I am the person who had nothing to say.
I am the person with hurt in her eyes, I am the person you never saw cry, I am the person living alone with her fears, I am the person destroyed by her peers.
I am the person who drowned in your scorn, I am the person who wished she hadn't been born, I am the person you destroyed for 'fun', I am the person, but not the only one.
I am the person whose name you don't know, I am the person who just can't let go, I am the person who has feelings too, And I was a person, just like you.
(This poem was written for the BEAT BULLYING ad in the UK and narrated by celebrity sports people.)
