2012 Text4baby State Enrollment Contest

 

  

National, state, and local text4baby partners nationwide are working together to connect pregnant women and new moms to health information they need. The 2012 Text4baby State Enrollment Contest is supporting this work at the state level through healthy competition. The contest was established in 2011 and grew out of the enthusiasm of text4baby partners like you around promoting text4baby as a valuable health resource for women and families.

Autism Research Could Be Set Back Years

  

In what could be a major blow to autism research efforts, scientists say that one-third of the world's largest collection of autism brain samples has been damaged.

Officials at McLean Hospital, a Harvard affiliate near Boston, found that a freezer where the samples were housed failed in late May, according to a report in The Boston Globe. Two alarms designed to warn of freezer problems had not gone off even as the internal temperature rose and all of the 150 brains inside thawed. Read more:

 In the United States today, about 68 million people are living with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. The good news is that high blood pressure can be prevented and controlled. The bad news is less than half of the population with high blood pressure actually has it under control.

Managing Stress

  

Stress can hit you when you least expect it-before a test, after an accident, or during conflict in a relationship. While everyone experiences stress at times, a prolonged bout of it can affect your health and ability to cope with life. That's why social support and self-care are important. They can help you see your problems in perspective...and the stressful feelings ease up.


Sometimes stress can be good. For instance, it can help you develop skills needed to manage potentially threatening situations in life. However, stress can be harmful when it is severe enough to make you feel over�whelmed and out of control.


Strong emotions like fear, sadness, or other symptoms of depression are normal, as long as they are temporary and don't interfere with daily activities. If these emotions last too long or cause other problems, it's a different story.

Katie Beckett: A Quiet Hero
  Called a "quiet hero and an inadvertent pioneer in the civil rights movement for people with disabilities" by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Katie Beckett recently passed away at the age of 34. In her short life, Katie was a remarkable individual who improved the lives of over half a million children by paving the way for children with disabilities to get the care they need at home instead of in the hospital.
