Feds: Sheltered Workshops May Violate Disabilities Act

The Obama administration is coming out in support of a group of adults with developmental disabilities who say they're being relegated to sheltered workshops even though they're capable of working in the community.

Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Justice filed a statement of interest in late April in a class action lawsuit pitting some 2,300 people with developmental disabilities against

the state of Oregon.

10 Strategies for Not Losing Your Temper

Losing your temper is never as rewarding a strategy as it appears half a second before letting something rip that you simply can't take back. It's the kind of bell you can't un-ring, and the repercussions are - typically - more severe than the problem that got you ticked off in the first place.

But it's so easy to fly off the handle!

Kids, spouse, customer service,

Kids With Disabilities Face Fallout From Bullying, Exclusion

Being left out or bullied is more likely to lead to depression in children with developmental disabilities than any facet of their condition, new research indicates.

The findings come from a study of 109 kids ages 8 to 17 with various special needs. Researchers asked the children and their parents to fill out questionnaires designed to identify signs of anxiety and depression. Then, the kids were screened to assess whether or not they were bullied or excluded by their peers.

"Letting My Butterflies Go"

Helping Children Move on to Kindergarten
 By Debora Jones

Every year in late spring, our class watches as caterpillars become pupa, then turn into butterflies. We release them outdoors during the last week of the school year. This activity symbolizes the children's growth during the past year and the new adventures that will lie ahead when they go to kindergarten.

Saying good-bye to a class of preschoolers is emotional for all involved-children, teachers, and families...
